MARTINSVILLE PLAYS HOST TO RADIO SHOW

Eli Gold's ``NASCAR Live'' radio show will be conducted from the infield at Martinsville Speedway tonight, and the public is invited to attend.

Scheduled guests on the show are Busch Grand National points leader David Green, Busch and Winston Cup driver Kenny Wallace and Busch drivers Hermie Sadler and Johnny Benson Jr.

The show, which broadcasts to more than 250 affiliate radio stations, begins at 7 p.m. About 200 seats will be available.

The show is a prelude to Sunday's Grand National and late model races - the Advance Auto Parts 500 - at Martinsville

In other news, veteran NASCAR driver Dick Trickle will replace injured Rodney Combs as driver of the Richard Petty-owned car in the Advance Auto Parts 500.

Combs broke his right shoulder in the All Pro Auto Parts 300 at Charlotte Motor Speedway last week and will miss the final two GN races of 1994.

In Washington, the Roanoke Stars 10-and-under girls' soccer team went 1-1-1 in the Washington Area Girls Soccer (WAGS) tournament, one of the nation's more prestigious events. Roanoke lost to Rockville, Md., 1-0. The Maryland team had outscored its opposition 89-0. The Stars beat the Reston Rockies 3-0 and tied the Alexandria Hot Shots 1-1.

Todd Stiles scored the game-winning goal eight minutes into the first overtime as Ferrum's men's soccer team defeated Guilford 2-1 in a non-conference match. Billy Ball scored on an assist from Chris Caison for the Panthers (5-7-1) in the first period. Guilford is 2-9-1.

Freshman Kelly Reisher scored one goal and assisted on two others as Radford (4-9, 1-3) earned a 3-1 victory over Towson State in a Big South women's soccer game in Towson, Md. The Tigers are 5-8, 2-3.

The Virginia Tech men's basketball team will hold its first ``Midnight Madness'' since 1991 to open the basketball practice season on Oct.14. Cassell Coliseum will open at 11:30 p.m., and no admission will be charged to spectators. The Hokies will begin practice at midnight and will stage a 3-point shooting contest and a slam-dunk contest before dividing the squad for a 20-minute scrimmage.

Aaron Kovac shot a 79 as Martinsville won the Piedmont District Golf Tournament at the Water's Edge Country Club at Smith Mountain Lake. The Bulldogs finished at 329. Tunstall defeated Fieldale-Collinsville in a playoff to finish second at 331. Martinsville and Tunstall will advance to the Region III tournament.
