MICKEY GETS INVITE FROM RADFORD COUNCIL

City Council has thrown its hat in the ever-widening ring of localities that would like Mickey and Minnie to set up housekeeping nearby. Council unanimously approved a resolution inviting the Walt Disney Corp. to consider the Interstate 81 corridor in Southwestern Virginia as a site for the historical theme park it initially proposed to build near Haymarket.

The resolution offers a laundry list of the area's advantages, including "unparalleled access to interstate highways, water and sewer utilities, clean air, low taxes, low-cost land, excellent schools, a friendly business climate with amicable, accessible local governments, a conscientious work force and close proximity to over 20 institutions of higher education."

The resolution also noted that Southwestern Virginia is "within 250 miles of 40 million people."

To punch up their point, council members went along with David Worrell's recommendation to have the city clerk affix the city's official seal to the final document, which will be signed by Mayor Tom Starnes.
