STINNETT FOUL SHOTS LIFT PARRY MCCLUER

BUENA VISTA - Monica Stinnett hit three of four free throws in the final 20 seconds, including two with 10 seconds left, to help Parry McCluer hold off Craig County in a Pioneer District game.

The Blues (10-2, 4-2) led 19-10 at halftime and held the Rockets to only two first-quarter points and one field goal in the first half, but Craig County (4-8, 3-3) rallied behind Chrissy Robertson, who scored 14 of her game-high 24 points in the fourth quarter.

Parry McCluer led 40-35 before Robertson hit a 3-pointer to cut the lead to two. Stinnett then hit her two free throws with 10 seconds left to give the Blues a 42-38 lead. Robertson hit another 3-pointer as time ran out to provide the final margin.

The Fighting Blues were led by Crystal Humphries, who scored 13 points. Misty Snider and Lindsey Coleman added 10 each for Parry McCluer.

Highland 41

MONTEREY - The Chargers lost the lead early in the fourth quarter, but made some key free throws late in the game to beat the Rams in the Pioneer District.

Jennifer Adams led Bath County (2-12, 1-5) with 18 points and Katie Hardbarger added 14. April Rexrode scored 15 points and hit a pair of 3-pointers for Highland (1-9, 0-6). Shyla Shumate scored 14, six of them in the third quarter to bring the Rams within a point, 34-33.

Martinsville 69

Magna Vista 54

RIDGEWAY - The Bulldogs' big three of Sam Ferguson, Tresita Holland and Erica Brandon combined to score 60 points as Martinsville (11-2, 10-1) downed the Warriors in a Piedmont District game.

Ferguson led Martinsville with 23 points, Holland pumped in 19 and Brandon added 18 for Martinsville, which outscored Magna Vista (10-4, 7-4) in every quarter.

Tanesia Kellam led the Warriors with 16 points. Felicia Craig scored 10 and hit a pair of 3-pointers.

William Byrd 65

Alleghany 55

LOW MOOR - William Byrd outscored Alleghany 24-14 in the third quarter and that provided the difference as the Terriers went on to defeat the Mountaineers in a Blue Ridge District game.

Cathy Smith scored 14 of her game-high 16 points in the second half and Kristi Dyer added 10 of her 14 in the second half to help the Terriers (11-2, 3-0).

Tasha Chapman scored 15 for the Mountaineers (7-6, 2-1), who played most of the game without senior co-captain Amanda Stover. Stover collided with Smith early in the game and needed five stitches for a cut on her eyebrow.

Valerie Broughman added 12 for Alleghany.

Narrows 53

Rocky Gap 39

NARROWS - Becky Turner scored eight of her team-high 13 points in the fourth quarter and grabbed 12 rebounds to lead Narrows past Rocky Gap in a Mountain Empire District game.

The Green Wave (6-6, 2-1) outscored the Eagles 20-5 in the fourth quarter. Suzanne Webb added 11 points and Melissa Lucas chipped in 10.

Rocky Gap was led by Nancy Tupper, who scored a game-high 15 points. Amanda Clark scored 11.

Rural Retreat 58

Lebanon 17

RURAL RETREAT - The Indians blanked the Pioneers in the first quarter, then put the away with balanced scoring in the third period of a Hogoheegee District victory.

Stephanie Kell scored six first-quarter points, as Rural Retreat (9-4, 6-4) took an 11-0 lead into the second period. Lebanon (2-11, 2-8) cut it to 16-10 at the half, but the Indians outscored the Pioneers 16-2 in the third quarter to seal it.

Twelve Rural Retreat players scored, led by Kerri Corvin with 11 points.

MARION - The Scarlet Hurricane used a full-court press to build an 11-point first-quarter lead and coasted to the non-district victory.

Stacy Miller scored 9 points and Leigh Jones had 8 to lead Marian, which improved to 12-1 despite having three of its top eight players out with injuries.

Bassett 52

Dan River 21

RINGGOLD - The Bulldogs led 22-2 after one period, 33-4 at the half, and cruised the rest of the way to a Piedmont District victory.

Kim Hairston led Bassett (11-2, 10-1) with 12 points even though she and the rest of the Bulldog starters played just eight minutes. Dan River was led by 11 points from Deauta Giggetts.
