HIGHLAND PARK, Mich. - Underscoring the fervor for light trucks and mini-vans in the United States, Chrysler Corp. reported Tuesday that it earned a record $651 million in the three months ending in September, up 54 percent from last year's record of $423 million.
The earnings, of $1.76 a share, came on record third-quarter revenues of $11.7 billion, up 20 percent from last year's $9.7 billion.
While retail sales of Chrysler cars slipped slightly in the quarter because of factory shutdowns to prepare for new models, more mini-vans and other trucks, like the Dodge Ram pickup and the Jeep Grand Cherokee, were sold.
