Surmonte started the business, originally called the Georgia Leather Co., in Newark, N.J., in 1933 with $28 he borrowed from his wife, Marie Georgia Surmonte. He was chairman of the board and treasurer at the time of his death.
Among Surmonte's survivors is a daughter, restaurant critic Dolores Kostelni of Lexington.
