Fry shot a 1-under-par 71 (35-36) and is tied with Frank Ferguson (38-33) of Washington Golf and Country Club and Jack Skilling (34-37) of Columbia Country Club.
Hanging Rock's Chip Sullivan is tied with four other golfers for 10th place at 75 (34-41). The second round begins at 9:30 a.m. today.

At Radford, the Highlanders survived a second-half scare to win their third straight men's soccer match, 3-2 over Liberty.
Goals by Che Henderson, Ryan Scott and Edwardo Wissar gave the Highlanders (8-4-2 overall, 3-1 Big South) a 3-0 lead before Liberty (2-9-1, 1-5) scored twice.
At Hollins, Amy Waldman and Angela Amstutz each scored two goals as Roanoke College (6-3-1 overall, 5-2 ODAC) topped Hollins 4-1 in a women's soccer match. Hollins (4-10, 0-7 ) was outshot 44-2 and got its lone goal from Louise Christovich.
At Lexington, goals by Bill Gill and Kevin Hocking lifted Washington and Lee's men's soccer team to a 2-1 Old Dominion Athletic Conference victory over Lynchburg. The Generals improve to 6-4-1 while Lynchburg is 6-6.
In Harrisonburg, Clay Rosenberger scored in the 17th minute and Eastern Mennonite held on for a 1-0 victory over Roanoke College in ODAC men's soccer. The Maroons (7-7, 5-3) failed to convert on two breakaways and hit two goal posts. The Royals improved to 11-4, 6-1.
Radford University will begin its basketball season with ``Highlander Hoops New Year'' at the Dedmon Center at 10:30 p.m. The event will include an exhibition game between former Radford men's and women's stars against an interfraternity all-star team at 10:45 and midnight introductions of the 1994-95 men's and women's teams. The men's team then will hold a scrimmage. Admission is free and open to the general public.
