COVINGTON WINS 7TH IN A ROW

Covington applied early pressure and made quick work of Rockbridge County for a 56-37 girls' basketball victory Wednesday night, the Cougars' seventh straight win.

The Cougars' full-court press helped force 24 Rockbridge County turnovers, many in the first half during which Covington (10-3) opened up a 34-21 lead.

JoAnn Helton scored eight of her game-high 15 points in the first quarter as the Cougars took a 15-6 lead. Michelle Jeter starred in the second half with nine rebounds and 10 of her 12 points.

Lorrie Coyner led the Wildcats with seven points.

Tuesday's games

Laurel Park 52, Gretna 50: In Gretna, Tracy Barksdale's corner jumper with five seconds left lifted the Lancers to a come-from-behind victory over the Hawks in the Piedmont District.

Barksdale's shot came after Laurel Park had gone into a stall with 1 minute, 33 seconds left in the fourth quarter and the score tied. Gretna was unable to get off a shot after Barksdale's heroics.

The Lancers trailed 37-33 heading into the final quarter, but hit seven of 12 free throws down the stretch to rally. Laurel Park had made five of 11 free throws. Gretna finished the game 10-for-25 from the line.

Shavika Watkins led a balanced Lancers attack with 11 points, and LaToya Perkins added 10.

Gretna was led by Sharita Dews' 19 points. Amber Hall added 10.

Castlewood 67, George Wythe 48: In Castlewood, the Blue Devils maintained first place in the Hogoheegee District by taking a big early lead and holding off the Maroons. Shannon Crouse scored 11 points for George Wythe (7-6 overall, 5-4 in the district) and Lisa Garland added 10.

Fieldale-Collinsville 60, Chatham 51: In Chatham, the Cavaliers survived eight 3-point field goals by Chatham to post a Piedmont District victory. Cicely Becker scored a game-high 24 points to lead Fieldale-Collinsville (7-6, 7-5). Chatham was paced by Natasha Hairston with 16.

Salem 66, Rockbridge County 40: In Lexington, Shellie Johnson scored eight of her game-high 12 points in the first quarter as the Spartans took a 19-6 lead and coasted to the Blue Ridge District victory over the Wildcats.

Salem used a zone press to build a 20-point halftime lead. Marilyn Huang added 10 for the Spartans.

The main difference in the game was at the free-throw line. Salem made 27 of 37 attempts compared with 9-of-18 shooting by Rockbridge County (0-12, 0-3).

Fort Chiswell 77, Grayson County 41: In Independence, the Pioneers outscored the Blue Devils 27-8 in the third quarter to win a Mountain Empire District matchup.

Amber Gunter scored seven of her 11 points in the quarter for Fort Chiswell. The Pioneers (2-10, 1-2) were led by Jenny Porter, who had a game-high 14 points. Trish Stewart added 11.

Emily Halsey led Grayson County (2-9, 1-2) with 13 points.
