1914 farmhouse fire ruled arson
STAFFORD - A fire that gutted an 80-year-old structure built on the foundation of George Washington's boyhood home was arson, Stafford County Fire Marshal Curt Alvis said Wednesday.
County and federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms investigators found evidence at the remains of the 1914 farmhouse to confirm their suspicions, Alvis said in a news release.
The farmhouse that burned down Sept. 26 covered foundation stones from the Washington family home built in 1727 at Ferry Farm. That house burned in the late 18th century, and another structure was built on the foundation in 1825. The 1914 farmhouse had been unoccupied for several years.
