DiscoveryWorks

RADFORD - DiscoveryWorks ... a children's museum, is now accepting registrations for fall classes for children and youth. Classes will held at Briarwood Club House in Hethwood and at Gilbert Linkous and Margaret Beeks Elementary schools in Blacksburg; at Claremont Elementary School in Pulaski County and at the museum in Radford.

All classes integrate the arts, sciences and humanities and relate to the museum's current exhibit, "Small Steps, Giant Leaps," a celebration of mankind's first steps on the moon.

"Small Steps, Giant Leaps" is open Wednesdays through Saturdays, 10 a.m.-4 p.m. at the museum, 1115 Norwood St., second floor. There is an admission charge. Group tours are available by appointment.

WTOB workshop

BLACKSBURG - WTOB (Channel 2) Blacksburg public-government access television will hold an evening workshop Thursday, Oct. 27, 7 p.m., at the WTOB studios, Five Chimneys Building, 203 W. Washington St.

Those who plan to attend should register by Monday, Oct. 24.

In the television workshop, participants learn how to use WTOB's video equipment to produce their own local programs. Workshops are offered each month.

Homes tour

CHRISTIANSBURG - The Montgomery Museum will sponsor a tour of historic homes including Fotheringay, a Virginia state landmark, on Saturday, Oct. 29, from 10 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.

The tour group will travel in two vans with tour guides. Participants may also bring their own cars. The tour fee is $10.

Ducks Unlimited

RADFORD - The New River Valley Chapter of Ducks Unlimited will hold its annual membership banquet and auction on Thursday, October 27, 6 p.m., in Muse Hall banquet room, Radford University.

Reservations made by Thursday, Oct. 13 are eligible for a special prize drawing, and Saturday, Oct. 22 is the final deadline.

One dinner ticket and membership is $45 or $70 for two dinner tickets and one membership. New members are welcome.

Childhood education

BLACKSBURG - The New River Valley Association for the Education of Young Children will sponsor its annual conference, "Teachers, Parents and Children Making Connections," Saturday, Oct. 15, from 8 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. at Blacksburg High School.

The admission fee is $10 for members and students, $15 for non-members. Breakfast, lunch and child care are included.

The keynote speaker is Lenore Blank who will share story-telling techniques.

Salvation Army aid

PULASKI - The Salvation Army will accept applications for Christmas assistance at special sites throughout the New River Valley. Applicants must bring proof of birth for all children in the household and identification showing current address information for all adults.

Registration will be held at the following sites and times:

Pulaski County:The Salvation Army Corps Building, 525 Commerce St.; Oct. 17 and 18, 9 a.m.-4 p.m.

Giles County:The Pearisburg Community Center; Oct. 19, 10 a.m.- 4:30 p.m.

Montgomery County:Belview United Methodist Church, 3619 Onyx Drive; Oct. 20 and 21, 10 a.m.-4:30 p.m.
