RELIGION BRIEFS

THE COMMUNITY CHRISTMAS STORE, a service project for the needy of Salem, Roanoke County and Vinton, will benefit from a Christian Community Concert on Saturday at Tabernacle Baptist Church, 1923 E. Main St. in Salem.

The concert will include music by Holy Wind, Wings of Faith, Twice Born, Wanda Smith, Mike Whitlow, Cheryl Campbell, The King's Heirs and Living Proof. Tickets for the 7 p.m. concert are $10; call 389-0961.

In 1993, the first year of operation, the store provided food, clothing and toys for 125 households. This year's goal is 500.

LOUIS ROBILLIARD, French organ virtuoso, will perform twice on Oct. 30 at St. Paul's Episcopal Church in downtown Salem. A professor at a conservatory in Lyons and organist at a church in France, he performs internationally and also is known for his ability to improvise at the organ.

The programs, which are free, are at 3 and 7 p.m. and celebrate the installation of a new pipe organ last spring. A reception will follow the evening recital.

MOUNT MORIAH BAPTIST CHURCH, 3521 Orange Ave. N.E., will observe the first anniversary of the coming of its pastor, the Rev. Thomas E. Pleasant with a special service Sunday at 3 p.m. Speaker will be the Rev. James A. Braxton of First Baptist Church in Salem.

BETTY TARPLEY, a staff member of Unity of Roanoke Valley Church, has been awarded a licensed Unity teacher certificate. She is a graduate of Unity School of Christianity as are four other teachers in the congregation.

THE REV. DR. W. MELVIN MAXEY, associate in ministry at St. Paul's Episcopal Church in Salem, will observe the 40th anniversary of his ordination to the Episcopal priesthood on Nov. 1 at a folk Eucharist at 7:30 p.m. at the church. Maxey was a professor at Ferrum College for 24 years and rector of St. Peter's Episcopal Church at Callaway before moving to Salem in 1988. His staff duties include assisting at services and visitation at nursing homes. He also volunteers as a chaplain at Lewis-Gale Hospital.

MIDWEEK ROUNDTABLE is a new program of recreation, music and Bible study held on Wednesday afternoons at Salem Presbyterian Church. A meal for adults as well as children follows. The Rev. Dr. Dean Lindsay, pastor, said the new program is intended to offer more spiritual enrichment for children than is possible on Sunday mornings.

Midweek Roundtable is in session from 4 to 7 p.m.

THE REV. DR. STUART CARLTON has been honored for 20 years as pastor of Bethel Baptist Church in Salem. Carlton is on a preaching and service mission to Slovenia.

BINEY and CAROLYN ENGLISH, songwriters and concert artists from Chattanooga, Tenn., will be in concert Saturday at Bethel Baptist Church , 1601 Colorado St., Salem , at 7:30 p.m.
