If there are people out there looking for a model for an improved health care system, they need only to look in Roanoke.
On July 25 at 7:30, I was at Roanoke Memorial Hospital, anxious, exhausted and desperately seeking answers as to my mother's condition. The hospital staff went above and beyond the call of duty to take excellent care of the patient and the visitor.
The staff on the 11th floor, where my mother would return after the operation, couldn't have been more helpful, friendly or caring. They made me, a newcomer, feel at ease. They helped me find a motel nearby and provided several updates from the operating room, alleviating my concerns.
After learning that my mother was fine and resting comfortably, I took a look around and noticed even more about the caring staff. I noticed all the nurses - male and female - wore white uniforms, but the sterile white did not extend to their personalities. They were kind, eager, professional and efficient.
I am assuming that the leaders of this institution must be in some way responsible for this professionalism and Southern hospitality.
People of Roanoke, I envy you. You should be proud of this hospital and the people who work there. They were a port in a storm for me and my family.
Thank you and God bless.
