IN SCHOOL

DAVID SPANGLER SR., instructor at William Fleming High School, has been awarded the Outstanding Virginia Junior ROTC Instructor Award for 1993-94. Spangler is one of 11 teachers in the state to receive the award.

THE ROANOKE EDUCATIONAL ASSISTANCE FOUNDATION has awarded scholarships to four Roanoke public school graduates.

Andrew Paul Marchal, Patrick Henry High School graduate, and Joyce Gardner, a William Fleming High School graduate, received David Roller Memorial Scholarships. They attend Virginia Commonwealth University. Marchal is the son of Richard and Carol Marchal, and Gardner is the daughter of Ronda Fritz.

The Roller stipend was established with community contributions in honor David Roller of Roanoke, who was a VCU art student at the time of his death.

Christopher Shannon Allmon, a William Fleming High School graduate, and Kristy Faye Ratcliffe, a Patrick Henry High School graduate, received the Frank Tota Leadership Award. The award was established through community contributions and a financial award from the American Association of School Administrators given to Tota, former Roanoke school superintendent.

Allmon, son of Mavis C. Allmon, attends the College of William and Mary. Ratcliffe, daughter of Phillip and Carol Carp, attends Virginia Tech.

CHRISTOPHER BOYD, son of Dianne Boyd of Roanoke, has been selected as a resident assistant at Lynchburg College. Boyd is a 1993 graduate of Patrick Henry High School and is a sophomore journalism major at Lynchburg.

TIFFANY RICHARDSON, daughter of Dorothy R. Richardson of Roanoke, is the recipient of a Minority Incentive Scholarship at East Tennessee State University for the 1994-95 school year. Richardson is a transfer student from Virginia State University and plans to major in English at East Tennessee State.

MELISSA R. WOODS and CAROL WHITESCARVER have earned master's degrees in education, curriculum and instruction from Virginia Tech.

Woods, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. T.E. Woods Jr. of Roanoke, has taken a job as a teacher in the Roanoke public schools and will be working with children with learning disabilities.

Whitescarver, daughter of Furman and Loretta Whitescarver Jr. of Salem, has taken a job in the Salem school system, teaching high school Spanish.
