RELIGION BRIEFS

THE COMMUNITY CHRISTMAS STORE, a service project for the needy of Salem, Roanoke County and Vinton, will benefit from a Christian Community Concert on Saturday at Tabernacle Baptist Church, 1923 E. Main St. in Salem.

The concert will include music by Holy Wind, Wings of Faith, Twice Born, Wanda Smith, Mike Whitlow, Cheryl Campbell, The King's Heirs and Living Proof. Tickets for the 7 p.m. concert are $10; call 389-0961.

In 1993, the first year of operation, the store provided food, clothing and toys for 125 households. This year's goal is 500.

BIBLE STUDY FOR INTERNATIONALS has begun at First Baptist Church in downtown Roanoke. The class, to held Sundays at 10:30 a.m. in Room 323 of the Family Life Center, will be taught by multilingual teachers who are members of the church. Call 224-3378 for more information.

BONSACK BAPTIST CHURCH is holding an emphasis on world hunger through Oct. 23. Rice bowls have been distributed to members of the congregation in which money will be collected for presentation. Funds will be sent to the Southern Baptist Foreign Mission Board for distribution as needed.

NORTH ROANOKE BAPTIST CHURCH, 6402 Peters Creek Road in the Hollins area, has started using two worship services and two Sunday school sessions each week. The 9 a.m. service offers a more casual but celebrative worship experience, and the 10:30 a.m. service offers more traditional worship.

John Cannon, a staff member, said each Sunday school session is age-graded for all ages. He said attendance has increased since the new schedule went into effect early this month.

MOUNT MORIAH BAPTIST CHURCH, 3521 Orange Ave. N.E., will observe the first anniversary of the coming of its pastor, the Rev. Thomas E. Pleasant with a special service Sunday at 3 p.m. Speaker will be the Rev. James A. Braxton of First Baptist Church in Salem.

GRACE AND TRUTH BAPTIST CHURCH, 3541 Orange Ave. N.E., has scheduled evangelistic services Sunday through Friday. Guest preacher will be the Rev. Cecil Wright.

A nursery will be staffed and special music presented nightly. The Sunday night service will start at 7 with those during the week at 7:30 p.m.

BETTY TARPLEY, a staff member of Unity of Roanoke Valley Church, has been awarded a licensed Unity teacher certificate. She is a graduate of Unity School of Christianity as are four other teachers in the congregation.

ST. JOHN'S EPISCOPAL CHURCH'S VESTRY has approved a master site plan for extensive renovation and enlargement of its 102-year-old building in downtown Roanoke. The plan will use lots south and west of the church which formerly contained apartment space as well as the present parking area. The master plan includes not only an addition to the present parish hall but also landscaped parking area and a playground. Changes in the church property have been studied for more than two years to provide more space for ministries and beautify the downtown neighborhood. Architectural Alternatives of Blacksburg is the designer.

JERUSALEM BAPTIST CHURCH, 1014 Norfolk Ave. S.W., will observe homecoming Sunday, beginning at the 11 a.m. service when the Rev. B. R. Hollins, pastor of Rockhill Baptist Church in Carbondale, Ill., will speak. A special homecoming choir will sing.

Lunch will follow the morning service, and at 3:30 p.m., the Rev. J.D. Holland, pastor of Lovely Valley Baptist Church in Rocky Mount, and the choir will lead worship.

Hollins also will conduct revival services Monday through Oct. 21. Those services start with prayer and praise at 7:30.

A MISSIONS CONFERENCEwill be led by Cletis Titus of Greensboro, N.C., Wednesday through Oct. 23 at Grace Baptist Temple, 1527 Gilford Road N.W. Several other mission workers will participate.
