The Radford University women's basketball team has lost forward Eve Kendall for the first semester of the season. The former George Wythe High School standout did not meet the NCAA's ``satisfactory progress'' requirements and will be academically ineligible, coach Lubomyr Lichonczak said.
Because of a change in NCAA rules, Kendall was unable to pick up the three credits she needed during summer school. If she successfully completes 15 hours this semester, she can rejoin the Highlanders for their Dec.20 game at Virginia.
Kendall, a 6-foot-1 sophomore, averaged 4.7 points and 4.5 rebounds per game last season.
Former Radford University standout Don Burgess will rejoin the team this season as a student assistant coach.
Burgess, a first-team All-Big South Conference selection last season, will work with the Highlanders until he completes the requirements for his degree in December.
John Mills has resigned after 20 years as Covington High School's baseball coach. Mills will remain at the school as a teacher.
Mills' overall record was 212-160-1. His first four teams went 17-54. In the past 16 years, however, Covington has gone 212-106-1 without a losing season. In that span, Mills' teams have won seven titles in the Pioneer and Blue Ridge districts and one in Region C. The Cougars also were Group A runners-up in 1992.
Covington officials say they hope to choose Mills' replacement from within the system.
