NAACP walkathon

RADFORD - The Montgomery County-Radford branch of the NAACP will sponsor a walkathon Saturday, Oct. 22, 10 a.m.-noon. The five-mile walk will raise funds for the chapter's youth programs.

The participating youth who raises the most money will get a $100 cash prize.

Those planning to participate should register by Saturday, Oct. 15. There is no entry fee.

Volunteers needed

CHRISTIANSBURG - The Montgomery County Christmas Store needs volunteers to help unload storage trailers Saturday, Oct. 15, 10 a.m.-1 p.m., at 1655 Roanoke St., located across from Hills Department Store.

Membership meeting

BLACKSBURG - A general membership meeting of the Montgomery

County Christmas Store will be held Monday, Oct. 24, 7:30 p.m. in the

Montgomery Regional Hospital cafeteria. Anyone interested in

the Christmas Store is invited to attend.

The Christmas Store begins daily operations Monday, Oct. 31. Volunteers are needed to help set-up and decorate the store and sort items.

The store will accept donations of used items daily starting Monday, Oct. 24. Store hours are:

Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday, 9:30 a.m.-4 p.m.

Wednesday, noon-9 p.m.

Saturday, 10 a.m.-1 p.m.

CCHARM watch

CHRISTIANSBURG - CCHARM Neighborhood Watch will hold its fall program Tuesday, Oct. 18, 7 p.m., St. Paul's United Methodist Church, fellowship hall.

Featured speaker Floyd Childress, a volunteer fireman with the Christiansburg Fire Department, will discuss measures that homeowners can take to prevent a fire and how neighborhood watch programs can assist when the fire department is responding to a call on their streets.

Carl Mitchell, owner and operator of Thornton Nursery, will also be featured. Mitchell, who has worked with the Snowville Neighborhood Watch, will hold a question and answer session regarding landscaping, lawn treatments, and pruning.

All residents of Carson, Chrisman, Hyde, Atkinson, Robin and Mountain View streets are welcome. Coffee and dessert will be provided.
