HELP 'WOOVIT' RAISE MONEY FOR NEW TRANSMITTER

The folks at Virginia Tech's student-run WUVT (90.7 FM) have a special reason for hoping that this year's fall RADIOTHON, Oct. 21-25, is a resounding success. For starters, the station desperately wants to move its transmitter from its present Lee Hall location, where its proximity to many students' living quarters has caused interference with radios, stereos, TV sets and other appliances.

In addition, costs to buy and maintain equipment continue to rise. And to top it all off, it's time for "Woovit" to renew its Federal Communications Commission license.

The nonprofit station depends on contributions from the community, which are its primary source of income. In making its plea for pledges this fall, the station cites a 45-year tradition of "playing the most diverse and cutting-edge music."

Listeners can call in pledges at 231-9880. Premiums are available for those donating certain amounts. To find out more, call the station, write it at 350 Squires Student Center, Virginia Tech, Blacksburg, Va. 24061-0546, or e-mail to swissvt.edu.
