MOUNTAIN LAKE - The Virginia Council Against Poverty will hold its quarterly meeting Tuesday, Oct. 18 through Friday, Oct. 21, at the Mountain Lake resort and conference center. The event is being hosted by New River Community Action.
Representatives from Virginia's 29 Community Action agencies, Project Discovery, Virginia CARES and the Virginia Water Project will be attendance.
Presentations from Microenterprise Program of People Inc., Abingdon's Community Action agency and Shirley Gerken who is leadership development specialist of Virginia Tech's Institute for Community Resource Development will highlight the event.

Contract awarded to widen road
CHRISTIANSBURG - The Virginia Department of Transportation will widen nearly a mile of Virginia 618 between U.S. 460 and Virginia 686.
Construction will begin within a month.
The $240,679 contract was awarded to DLB Inc. of Hillsville.
