Bland County, which is distinguished by the fact that its roster is comprised of players from both Bland and Rocky Gap High Schools, took a huge step toward winning the Mountain Empire District with the victory. The Bears (5-1) are 3-0 in the league with one MED game left.
Narrows (3-3, 1-1) took a 12-10 lead when Norman Perkins scored on a 1-yard run on the first play of the fourth quarter. Bland County's John Stinson returned the ensuing kickoff to the Narrows 5-yard line, but a clipping penalty brought the ball back to the Green Wave 35.
The Bears, who were penalized 11 times for 81 yards, were pushed back to the 43 by an illegal motion penalty that set up Lambert's pass to Matthews on a third-and-18 play.
Lambert finished 8-of-14 for 114 yards.
Narrows led 6-0 on Bryan Pruett's 4-yard touchdown pass to Gary Lowery in the first quarter. Bland County scored 10 points in the second on a 33-yard field goal by Matthews and a 1-yard touchdown run by Lambert.
Narrows had better offensive numbers than did the Bears - the Green Wave had 239 yards and 19 first downs to Bland County's 179 and seven - but the Bears defense didn't break and their offense came up with the crucial big play.
Perkins rushed for 106 yards for the Green Wave and Lowery had eight catches totaling 51 yards.
