W&L WOMEN RUN AWAY WITH STATE TITLE

Despite running without injured two-time All-American Josephine Schaeffer, the Washington and Lee women's cross country team won its third consecutive Division II-III state championship Saturday in Newport News.

Generals junior Amy Mears won the individual championship in 18 minutes, 22 seconds, followed by teammate Maren Wright 26 seconds later. Also earning all-state honors for W&L were Kim Herring (third place), Carson Flowers (sixth), Sue Deutsch (seventh) and Nat Messmore (10th).

The Generals placed third in the men's meet, led by Will Olson's ninth-place finish. Christopher Newport won the men's team title and the Captains' James Ratcliff was the individual winner in 25:06.

In Asheville, N.C., Che Henderson scored a goal and assisted on one in Radford's 2-0 victory over UNC Asheville in a Big South Conference men's soccer match. Ian Spooner scored off a Henderson pass at the 13:03 mark of the first half to give Radford (9-4-2 overall, 4-1 in the Big South) the only goal it would need. Henderson put away the game when he swiped an errant pass and scored from about 5 yards at the 79:48 mark. The victory was the Highlanders' fourth in a row. The Bulldogs are 3-9-1, 1-5-1.

In Blacksburg, Michael Martinek and Michael DeGenova each scored to push Louisville past Virginia Tech 2-0 in a Metro Conference men's soccer match. Louisville (7-6, 1-2) outshot the Hokies 11-10. Virginia Tech is 4-8 and 0-2.

Ryan Traynor and Robert Kozak scored second-half goals to spoil Roanoke College's home finale and give Randolph-Macon a 2-0 victory in an Old Dominion Athletic Conference men's soccer match. Roanoke (7-8, 5-4) outshot the Yellow Jackets 17-7, but Traynor's goal at the 61-minute mark was the only score Randolph-Macon (12-3-1, 6-1) needed.

In Lexington, third-ranked Virginia Wesleyan continued its dominance of the ODAC with a 4-0 men's soccer victory over Washington and Lee. Jim Hickling had a goal and an assist for the Marlins (14-0-1, 7-0). The Generals are 6-5-1, 4-4.

In Ferrum, Pfeiffer (9-3-2) got goals from Ryan Layton and Todd Moniz to beat the Panthers 2-0 in a men's soccer match. Ferrum (5-9-1) got six saves from former Franklin County goalie Stevie Reynolds.

In Greensboro, N.C., Julie Struthers scored 10 minutes into the second half for the only goal Roanoke College would need in a 2-0 victory over Greensboro College. Lisa Franzino also scored, and goalkeeper Kara Hedges posted her fifth shutout for the Maroons (8-4-1). Greensboro is 7-5-1.

In Lexington, Kait Barton and Erica Reineke each had a goal and an assist in Washington and Lee's 4-0 victory over Swarthmore in a non-conference women's soccer match. Freshman goalie Delia Coyle had 24 saves for the Generals (8-3). Swarthmore is 2-11.

In Ferrum, the Panthers couldn't find the goal with any of their 13 shots in a 3-0 loss to Pfeiffer in women's soccer. Three players scored for Pfeiffer (5-9). Ferrum is 6-7.

In Shawsville, Galax and Patrick Henry-Glade Spring won the team titles at the Shawsville Group A and Virginia Independent Conference Invitational cross country meet at Camp Alta Mons. Galax had three runners in the top 10 to win the boys' meet with 58 points, followed by Floyd County with 82. PH, led by Kelly Rector's first-place finish in 21:10 on the 3.25-mile course, won the girls' meet with 26 points. Covington's Chris Merrell was the boys' individual winner in 17:13.

In College Station, Texas, the Virginia Tech women's cross country team placed sixth in the 16-team Texas A&M Invitational. Michelle Barrett led the Hokies with a ninth-place finish in 18:54, and Tech's Tracy Shea finished 18th, Melissa Ward was 22nd and former Christiansburg High School runner Carrie Porterfield was 37th. Rice won the team title.

Shannan Wilkey placed fifth individually in 19:46 to lead the Radford women's cross country team to a third-place finish at the Wake Forest Cross Country Meet in Winston-Salem, N.C. The Highlanders finished with 78 points, third behind first-place Wake Forest (35) and Richmond (48) and ahead of Virginia Commonwealth (79) and Winthrop (87). Wake Forest's Chrissy Person was the individual champ in 19:11. Radford was fourth with 86 points in the five-team men's race behind Wake Forest (29), VCU (36) and Richmond (71) and ahead of Winthrop (103). Radford was led by Kevin Knepshield's 20th-place finish in 27:12. Bruce Berger of VCU won the men's race in 25:00.

Roanoke College runners Lynn Schwehr and J.J. Maybury won the individual championships at the Homecoming Invitational cross country meet at Davis & Elkins College in Elkins, W.Va.

Schwehr covered the 5-kilometer course in 23:06 to lead five Maroons in the top 12 as the Roanoke women won the six-team meet with 25 points, followed by Bethany (60), Bluefield (67), Glenville State (97) and Davis & Elkins (104). Roanoke's Carolyn Haller was third and Sarah Wood fourth.

The men's team finished second with 58 points, behind Glenville State (54) and ahead of Alderson-Broaddus (77), Bluefield (80), Davis & Elkins (99) and Bethany (103). Maybury finished the five-mile race in 29:02, and teammates Nathan Lang and Chris Overcash were sixth and 10th, respectively.

In Lexington, Ohio, Flip Groggins of Fincastle won the pole for today's Sports Car Club of America national championship race at Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course. Groggins, driving an Oldsmobile Cutlass, set a track qualifying record with a time of 1 minute, 28.9 seconds.
