Folklife festival

Ferrum College's 21st annual Blue Ridge Folklife Festival is scheduled for Saturday from 10 a.m.-5 p.m. on the Franklin County campus.

Janette Carter of the original Carter family will perform and participate in one of the many music workshops.

The traditional ``Blue Ridge Strings Band'' stage will feature old-time fiddle and banjo music, and the ``Traditions in Sacred Music'' stage will host gospel singing and music.

The festival includes authentic crafters, traditional foods, a horse pull, coon mule jumping and coon dog competitions.

Admission is $4 adults, $3 senior citizens, $2 children 6-15, under 6 free.

African-American conference for women

``Sister to Sister, A Conference For All African-American Women'' will be held Thursday through Oct. 23 in The Richmond Centre, The Richmond Marriott.

The event will include speeches by actress Ruby Dee, Linda C. Byrd-Harden, executive secretary of the Virginia State Conference NAACP, and Susan Taylor, editor-in-chief of ESSENCE magazine.

A series of seminars and group sessions, covering such topics as images of black women in popular culture, discrimination in the workplace, black feminism and raising black children will provide a forum for the exchange of ideas among black women..

Gala opening at VWCC

Virginia Western Community College's new Humanities Center will open Nov. 18 from 7-10 p.m. with a gala that promises ``great art, great music, great food.''

Works by more than 80 regional artists will be on display during the ``Cajun Invasion Art Occasion.''. Food by Alexander's restaurant will be accompanied by music from Danny Collet and the Louisiana Swamp Cats.

Tickets are $50 per person and are available through the college bookstore, at the Arts Council of the Blue Ridge or by calling 857-6048.

Proceeds benefit the Virginia Western Educational Foundation.

Authors reception

The American Association of University Women's Book and Author Reception will be Nov. 6 at the Holiday Inn, Staunton, from 3-5 p.m.

This year's event spotlights Alice Leonhardt, Howard Owen, Mary Price Coulling and Elizabeth Massie, all of Virginia.

Leonhardt, author of more than 17 young-adult books, is writing a series involving horses and horsemanship with a boarding-school setting.

Owen is the sports editor of The Richmond Times-Dispatch. His first novel, ``Littlejohn,'' made him a finalist for the Discovery Award in 1993. His second novel was released in August.

Coulling has written a biography of Gen. Robert E. Lee's daughters, ``The Lee Girls,'' and ``Margaret Junkin Preston: A Biography,'' published in May, 1993.

``Sineater,'' a first novel by Massie, was the winner of the 1993 Bram Stoker Award. She has also published numerous horror and dark fantasy stories in magazines and anthologies and is working on two novels and a novella.
