The program, which received the Wildlife Conservationist of the Year award from the Virginia Wildlife Federation this year, has distributed 170,000 pounds of venison in the first three years of its existence.
The goal this year is 100,000 pounds, but it is going to take more than just donations of venison if that figure is reached, said David Horne, the program director. Money is needed for processing - about $30 a deer.
Hunters for the Hungry has been conducting a fund raising effort this year called "A Dollar Mekes a Difference."
Hunters are being asked to donate a dollar to the program when they purchase their hunting licenses. License agents have been provided envelopes that can be used for making a donation.
"We are getting more support, but no where near the amouhnt needed tgo process the amouhg of deer that we can get," said Horne.
If half the license buyers would contribute one dollar the program could doulble the 70,000 pounds of venison contributed last year, Horne said.
