Mike Fischer scored on a 22-yard shot in the 25th minute to lift the Virginia men's soccer team to a 1-0 win over Princeton in the championship game of the Lanzera/Holiday Inn Classic in Charlottesville. Starting goalkeeper Mark Peters recorded three saves for his second straight shutout for the Cavaliers (12-2). Princeton is 5-4-1.
Davidson scored two goals in the second half to defeat Virginia Tech 2-1 in women's soccer. Freshman Michele Olsavsky scored the lone goal for the Hokies (7-6).
Roanoker K.J. Hippensteel advanced in competition Sunday at the final Mid-Atlantic junior tournament of the season in Newport News with a 6-1, 6-0 victory over David Ngdba of Silver Spring, Md.
Hippensteel, 14, also defeated Zach Myers of Winchester 6-1, 6-1 in the 61-player tournament that is a qualifier for national indoor competition. The tournament continues next weekend in Newport News with the round of 32.
In Point Pleasant, W.Va., the Salem Sabres under-11 Maroon boys' team finished second in its division of the Point Pleasant Battle Days soccer tournament. Josh Bromfield led the offense and Logan Reeves and goalie Nick Capito anchored the defense as the Sabres finished 3-2-1 in the tournament.
The Roanoke Star under-12 white team finished second in its division at the Appalachian Fall Festival tournament in Kingsport, Tenn. The Roanoke team won two games and lost one.
The Roanoke Star Under-14 boys' soccer team earned a berth to the State Cup by winning a preliminary tournament in Virginia Beach. Phuong Duong and Tyler Godsey scored for 21st-seeded Roanoke, which beat the 12th-seeded Atlantic Sharks 2-1. The Star will become the first green team from Roanoke to compete in the State Cup next weekend in Virginia Beach.
The Virginia State Golf Association team retained the Sumner Cup by playing the Middle Atlantic PGA team to a 36-36 tie in the two-day competition that ended Sunday at Stoney Creek in Wintergreen.
