AREA RANGES OPEN FOR SIGHTING-IN GUNS

If you have a deer gun that needs to be sighted, two Roanoke Valley shooting clubs are scheduled to open their ranges for that purpose Oct.30 and Nov.6.

Participating in the program will be the Roanoke Rifle and Revolver Club and the Ridge Rifle Club. Facilities will be provided for center-fire rifles, handguns and muzzleloaders.

The Roanoke Rifle and Revolver Club range is on the Franklin County side of Windy Gap Mountain. It is reached by traveling south from Roanoke on Virginia 116, then turning left at the foot of the mountain onto Virginia 678. Go one mile, then turn left on a gravel road and follow it to the range. Additional information is available by phoning 774-6851.

The Ridge Rifle Club range is located along U.S. 220 41/2 miles north of Fincastle (left-hand side going north). Additional information is available from Bill Carter, 977-4017.

Both clubs provide targets, shooting benches and coaches. Shooting takes place from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. There will be a $2 per gun charge. Participants should bring the ammo they plan to use during the hunting season. Ear protectors also should be brought to the ranges.

Several other ranges are located in the Jefferson and George Washington national forests. For information, call the Jefferson in Roanoke County at 265-6054, and the George Washington in Harrisonburg at 703-564-8300.

On Target, a gun shop in Roanoke, offers an indoor range where muzzleloading guns and handguns can be fired.
