MARSHALL HOME WON'T BE AUCTIONED

The owners of the Fauquier County home of formative Supreme Court Chief Justice John Marshall have decided to negotiate a sale with individual buyers rather than auction off the property.

An auction at Oak Hill had been scheduled for Saturday, but was canceled because of a lack of bidders, auctioneer Steve Lister said.

Oak Hill, now a 366-acre farm with the 1773 house of Marshall's father and Marshall's adjoining 1818 mansion, passed out of the Marshall family in hard times after the Civil War. It's been owned by six families since then.
