GLENVAR, VARNEY WIN REGION C

Glenvar's Nick Varney blew away the Region C golf tournament field at Wytheville on Tuesday, cruising to a five-stroke victory with a 1-under-par 69.

George Wythe's John Ervin was second at 74.

Tommy Lesperance (third at 75) and Ray Harrell (fifth at 77) gave Glenvar three golfers in the top five. Glenvar also cruised to the team title with a 305. George Wythe was second with a 317.

In other sports in the region:

Ferrum finished third among 10 teams at the Aubrey Apple Invitational golf tournament hosted by Greensboro College. The Panthers had a team score of 625 to finish 24 strokes behind winner Christopher Newport. Erick Wyatt of second-place Pembroke State was the medalist, shooting 72-69-141.

Virginia Tech finished eighth among 12 teams at the Ping/Tulsa Invitational golf tournament in Tulsa, Okla. Tag Ridings of third-place Arkansas shot 73 in the final round for a 209 total, 1-under par, to take medalist honors.

At Harrisonburg, Anthony Mazzarelli stopped a penalty kick in the second overtime to preserve Washington and Lee's 3-3 tie with Eastern Mennonite in an Old Dominion Athletic Conference men's soccer match. After the Royals took a 3-2 lead in the first overtime on Clay Rosenberger's penalty kick, the Generals' Bill Gill scored a short-handed goal to tie it.

Ginny Johnson of North Cross set a course record in a cross country meet against visiting GW-Danville. Johnson completed the 2.9-mile course in 17 minutes, 45 seconds, but GW-Danville won the meet 20-43. GW-Danville defeated North Cross 16-48.

Douglas Kenney sank a 5-foot birdie putt on the first playoff hole, as Cave Spring beat GW-Danville by one stroke to finish second in the Northwest Region golf tournament at Waters Edge in Penhook. The finish earned the Knights a berth in next week's Group AAA golf tournament at Hampton. Victor Garcia carded Cave Spring's best score with a 2-over-par 74 to finish in a second-place tie with Hylton's Matt Krauss. Scott Bailey's 81 and Ernie Cochran's 82 rounded out Cave Spring's scoring.

Halifax County won the team championship with a 303.
