ARTS AND CRAFTS FAIR STARTS FRIDAY IN CHRISTIANSBURG

The 16th annual SENIOR ARTS AND CRAFTS FAIR runs from 5-9 p.m. at the National Guard Armory, College and Depot streets, Christiansburg, offering a variety of items handmade by area seniors. The fair continues Saturday from 9 a.m.-4:30 p.m. Admission is free. Proceeds benefit projects and activities for seniors.

The Senior Athletes of Montgomery County plan to sell lunches, food and baked goods as well as $1 chances on a quilt to be given away Saturday. In addition, there are door prizes every half-hour Saturday.

Bob Smith of WKEX (1430 AM) broadcasts live from the fair from 9 a.m.-noon Saturday. Smith and the WKEX Happy Clown will have prizes and freebies for visitors.

ANNIE T. UNDERWOOD of Radford hopes to see lots of family and friends at her 100th birthday party Saturday, 2-4 p.m., at Bain Chapel, Bain Chapel Road (Virginia 787) in Dry Valley. "She's doing fine," reports her daughter, Esther Hart. Underwood, the widow of W.B. Underwood - a railroad worker and preacher - still keeps house for herself. "She's got friends everywhere," Hart said. The mother of five also has lots of family, including 19 grandchildren and 34 great-grandchildren. Underwood officially becomes a centenarian on Tuesday.

SENIOR GATHERINGS

State Sen. Madison Marye, D-Shawsville, speaks to seniors this evening at 5 when Radford's AARP chapter holds its potluck dinner at the Radford Senior Center, 27 First St. Everyone 50 or older is welcome to bring a favorite dish. The Walk-a-Roos Senior Walking Club meets Thursdays, 8 a.m., at Hardee's, U.S. 460, Christiansburg. Members walk regularly and individually to reach a common goal.

Nondenominational Bible study group meets Thursdays, 10:15 a.m., at the Christiansburg Senior Center, 655 Montgomery St.

A coffee for seniors is held the last two Thursdays of each month (that's this Thursday and Oct. 27), 10:30 a.m., at the Free Memorial Library, Giles Avenue, Dublin, by Pulaski County Friends of the Library. 674-2855.

It's card night on the second and fourth Monday of each month starting at 6:30 p.m. at the Christiansburg Senior Center, 655 Montgomery St.

Golden aerobics are Tuesdays and Thursdays, 8:30-9:30 a.m.

The walking group meets Mondays, Wednesdays and Friday, 9 a.m., at the Community Center for coffee and juice. Walk in the gym or at the high school track. Those who prefer earlier walks might want to check out the group that meets Mondays and Fridays at 7:30 a.m. to walk on the Huckleberry Trail. Bob Blanton has details at 552-1919. Before engaging in any exercise program, it's recommended that seniors check with their personal physicians.

Oct. 27, the staff of the Cardiac Therapy and Intervention Center at Virginia Tech provides a health screening for seniors, 10 a.m.-noon in the activity room. It's free, except for the optional cholesterol check, which is $5. Free coffee and juice, too.

Senior Aerobics meets Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays, 8-9 a.m., at the National Guard Armory. The less-strenuous Easy Motions exercise group meets Tuesdays and Thursdays, 9-10 a.m. Registration and a certificate from your physician are required.

Thursday, the senior pool tournament is 1:30 p.m. at the Christiansburg Recreation Center, 95 College St. Ribbons and prizes are awarded.

A covered-dish lunch with slide show about historical Christiansburg is set for Monday, 11:30 a.m. at the center.

The Hair Fair is Tuesday, 9:30-11:30 a.m. Free haircuts and manicures by Christiansburg High School cosmetology students.

The Senior Advisory Board meets Tuesday at 2 p.m.

Oct. 26, 10 a.m.-noon, the New River Valley Agency on Aging processes senior identification cards at the center for those age 60 or older. A $1.50 donation is requested.

Today, the Christiansburg morning group is at English Meadow for the birthday party at 1:30 p.m. The afternoon group works at SHARE at 1 p.m.

Tuesday, the Warm Hearth group goes to Brookmeade at 2 p.m. to be hosts of the birthday party.

Oct. 26, at noon, RSVP celebrates 21 years of volunteering at its annual recognition luncheon at the Holiday Inn, Blacksburg. All RSVP members are invited. Transportation is available.

Oct. 27 (that's a Thursday), the Dine 'Round Club meets at the Three Legged Cow in Floyd.

SENIOR SHORTS

Today's Virginia Tech Center for Gerontology lunchtime forum discusses "The Humane Through Utilitarian and Feminist Ethics." Pamela Teaster, a Tech doctoral candidate in public administration, leads the forum today at noon in 150 Squires Student Center, Virginia Tech. "Strictly Seniors" is a new cable television offering from WTOB (Channel 2), Blacksburg public-government access television. The program, which premiered Monday, is rebroadcast Thursday at 10 a.m. The initial show focuses on stress reduction and relaxation techniques. Future programs plan to address other issues of interest to seniors including health care, exercise and nutrition and finances. WTOB also welcomes your program suggestions at 961-1199.

Green Thumb, Inc., a nonprofit federally funded employment and training program for low-income job seekers 55 and older, now is recruiting seniors who need employment, full time or part time. Call (800) 419-JOBS (5627). Green Thumb is sponsored by the National Farmers Union.
