ROCKY GAP GETS PAST GALAX 46-45

Michelle Sarver hit a driving layup with 15 seconds to play to give Rocky Gap an upset victory over Galax, the top team in the Mountain Empire District.

Trailing by a point, Sarver took the ball into the lane and scored her only points to give Rocky Gap (5-11, 3-2) a 46-45 lead. After a Galax turnover, the Eagles missed a free throw with three seconds to play, but the Tide could only manage a desperation midcourt shot from Tammy Cox.

Cox, who led Galax (11-3, 4-1) with 20 points, injured her ankle on the final play.

Nancy Tupper, the leading scorer in the game with 22 points for Rocky Gap, sank 12 of 14 free throws for the Eagles.

Narrows 64

Grayson County 24

NARROWS - Narrows used a fullcourt man-to-man defense to force many turnovers and jump out to a 25-3 first-quarter lead as the Green Wave moved into a tie for first place in the Mountain Empire District with a victory over Grayson County.

Narrows (9-6, 4-1) was led by Melissa Lucas, who scored a game-high 15 points - 13 in the first half. Suzanne Webb scored nine of her 13 in the first half as well to help the Green Wave. Melissa Lawrence added 10 points and 13 assists.

Grayson County (3-10, 2-3) was led by Terri Summer, who scored 10 points.

Martinsville 72

Laurel Park 48

MARTINSVILLE - Erica Brandon scored 18 of her game-high 26 points in the first half, as the Bulldogs rolled past the Lancers in the Piedmont District.

Sam Ferguson scored all 10 of her points in the first quarter before leaving the game with a knee injury. Martinsville (13-2, 12-1) led 26-8 after one period.

Trecita Holland had 17 points, nine steals and six assists for the Bulldogs.

Tanya Martin scored 14 points for Laurel Park (4-11, 3-10).

Fort Chiswell 73

Bland 19

FORT CHISWELL - Jenny Porter tossed in 23 points as the Pioneers drubbed the Rockets in a Mountain Empire District game.

Trish Stuart added 18 points for Fort Chiswell (3-12, 2-3)

The Pioneers dished out a season-high 18 assists, led by Amber Gunter's seven.

Glenvar 72

Parry McCluer 31

BUENA VISTA - The Highlanders pressed the Fighting Blues from the start and never were threatened in a surprisingly one-sided Pioneer District game.

Toree Morris canned three 3-pointers and scored a game-high 20 points for Glenvar (13-2, 8-0). Marilea Hale and Erika Hale scored 11 each, as the Highlanders moved a step closer to wrapping up the Pioneer title.

Glenvar ran up an 11-point lead in the first quarter and pushed it to 23 before the half.

Chrystal Humphries scored 17 points for Parry McCluer (11-3, 5-3), which dropped to third place in the district.

Covington 45

James River 43

COVINGTON - Nancy Shawver hit a short jumper with 20 seconds to play to give the Cougars the lead and Jo Ann Helton hit a pair of free throws with 9 seconds remaining to ice Covington's Pioneer District win.

Amy Sprinkle hit a jump shot to pull James River (3-11, 2-5) within a bucket with 2.5 seconds left. After a Knights timeout, Covington inbounded the ball with a long entry pass to Helton, who held the ball until time expired.

Bessie Laws scored 16 points and Helton added 10 for Covington (6-2, 11-4). Angie Johnson led the Knights with 15, Sprinkle had 11.

Highland 54

Harman 47

MONTEREY - Shyla Shumate scored 11 of her game-high and season-high 28 points in the fourth quarter as the Rams pulled away for the non-district win.

Shumate, a senior center, led Highland to only its second win in 12 games. April Rexrode added 10 points for the Rams, who led 34-33 after three quarters.

Harman was led by Chrissy Lambert's 19 points, and Katie Peter added 12.

Salem 53

Alleghany 37

Freshman Sarah Palmer scored 14 of her game-high 19 points in the first half, including nine in the first quarter to help Salem run past Alleghany at home and remain undefeated in the Blue Ridge District.

After playing their second game in as many nights, Salem (12-4, 5-0) jumped out to a 37-10 halftime lead and never looked back. Shellie Johnson helped the Spartans, scoring eight of her 12 points in the first half.

Tasha Chapman led the Mountaineers with 14 points. Carra Slaughter added 13.
