TODAY'S TOPIC: PUBLIC LANDS

Will you actively support the elimination of taxpayer subsidies to the mining, ranching and timber industries by requiring that fair-market value be paid for extracting minerals and grazing on public lands, and by phasing out below-cost timber sales from national forest lands?

- Wayne Allen, Rocky Mount

COLEMAN: "I support fair-market pricing for the use of public lands, including the extraction of minerals, the harvesting of timber, and grazing."

NORTH: "The various industries have supported payment to the U.S. government; for example, the mining industry has supported paying a royalty. However, the Clinton administration proposal would seriously restrict the use of public land and result in job losses. I support a fair price which would keep jobs, allow the productive use of these natural resources and result in fair payments to the U.S. Treasury. I support public-private partnership in this area."

ROBB: "I support reforming many of our antiquated policies that allow industries to profit unfairly from public resources. In fact, I've voted to raise grazing fees and require royalties from hard-rock mining on public lands. Charging less-than-market rates for use of our public natural resources represents a significant loss of revenue to the government and allows unfair competition against those who pay market rates on private lands."
