TODD NOTCHES RVD NET TITLE

Alicia Todd of Cave Spring managed only one victory over Priya Achayra of Pulaski County in four girls tennis matches this season.

But Todd won one that counted.

Todd's 6-2, 6-2 win over Achayra earned her the individual singles title in the Roanoke Valley District tennis tournament Tuesday at the Dedmon Center. Achayra, only a freshman, has won every other singles meeting between the two.

But Todd got another win over her rival on Tuesday in the doubles championship match when she and Debra Masters knocked off Achayra and Kristen Beeler 6-3, 6-4.

Todd and Achayra had yet another meeting Tuesday, but this one didn't last long. Todd withdrew after losing the first set 7-6 in their singles matchup during the tournament's team semifinals.

But Todd's Cave Spring team went on to beat Pulaski County 6-3 to advance to today's team championship match against Patrick Henry, which won all of its singles matches en route to a 7-2 win over Franklin County. Natalie Rude picked up two wins for the Patriots, defeating Ashley Beckner 6-2, 6-2 in singles and teaming with Saywer Cole for a 6-3, 6-2 win over Franklin County's Julie Ellis and Jennifer Fergusm 6-3, 6-2.

Play will begin at 9:30 a.m. today at River's Edge Sports Complex.
