Susan Sautter and Carrie Jacobs each scored as Ferrum defeated Shenandoah 2-1 in a Dixie Conference women's soccer match at Shenandoah. Ferrum (6-8 overall, 1-3 Dixie Conference) outshot Shenandoah 17-9. Shenandoah is 8-4, 2-2.
Emerson Umana and Todd Stiles each scored as the Ferrum men's soccer team defeated Shenandoah 2-1 in a Dixie Conference match at Shenandoah. Chris Evans and Chris Cooper each got an assist for the Panthers (6-9-2 overall, 3-2-1 Dixie Conference) and former Franklin County standout Stevie Reynolds had eight saves. Shenandoah is 6-8-1, 1-4.
At Lynchburg, Washington and Lee was outshot 17-9 but managed to defeat Lynchburg 2-0 in Old Dominion Athletic Conference women's soccer. Marina Jackson scored in the first half for the Generals (9-3, 6-2) while Erica Reineke added a second-half goal.
At Greensboro, N.C., Shawn Mahoney scored two goals as league-leading UNC-Greensboro to a 3-1 win over Radford in a Big South Conference men's soccer match. The loss ended a four-game winning streak for Radford (9-5-2, 4-2), which led 1-0 on Ian Spooner's 15th goal (11th in the nation) of the season at the 25:58 mark of the first half. The Spartans (12-3, 6-0) outshot Radford 16-6.
Cave Spring made it a clean sweep in the Roanoke Valley District girls' tennis tournament.
The Knights whipped Patrick Henry 6-2 in the championship match on Wednesday to advance to the Northwest Region Tournament, which begins Monday at E.C. Glass in Lynchburg. The top two teams out of the four at the region advance to the eight-team state tournament.
On Tuesday, Cave Spring picked up the other two available region-tournament spots as Alicia Todd won singles and teamed with Debra Masters to win doubles.
At Huntington, W.Va., Marshall scored a goal in the second half to defeat Virginia Tech 2-1 in men's soccer. Mark Ludwig scored the goal for the Hokies (4-9).
