WINN-DIXIE STORES TO INSTALL ATMS

Winn-Dixie Stores Inc. said Wednesday it plans to install automated teller machines in its supermarkets next year.

Mickey Clerc, spokesman for the chain based in Jacksonville, Fla., said the ATMs will not be aligned with a specific bank. Winn-Dixie has no banking partner in the venture.

Rather, he said, the stores will be equipped with a switching device that will work in connection with banking networks such as Plus. Customers with ATM cards from any bank on a network will be able to access their accounts through the supermarket ATM.

People who use ATMs outside their own banks are charged a switching fee that generally ranges from $1 to $2 per transaction.

Clerc said the machines will be installed beginning in April in 900 of the company's 1,140 supermarkets in 13 Southeastern and Southwestern states. The area includes the Roanoke Valley.
