CHARLES CASE, NS EXECUTIVE, DIES AT 48

Charles Case, an Norfolk Southern Corp. assistant vice president of accounting who worked for the company 23 years, died Wednesday after a short illness. He was 48.

Case was born in Chickamauga, Ga., the son and grandson of Southern Railway locomotive engineers. After serving three years in the Air Force, he earned a degree in accounting at West Georgia College.

He joined the Southern Railway in 1971 and spent the next 11 years in various accounting positions in Atlanta and Washington.

After the consolidation of Norfolk and Western Railway with Southern Railway in 1982, Case became the director of expenditure accounting in Roanoke. By 1991, he was supervising several hundred people as an assistant vice president.

Bob Auman, manager of public relations for Norfolk Southern in Roanoke, said Case was one of a few employees chosen to implement a quality improvement process. He said Case was committed to the program, instructing others in the processes and implementing the management principles in his own department.

Case served as a youth fellowship leader as well as a member of the finance committee at Cave Spring Methodist Church.

He is survived by his wife, Cheryl T. Case, and two sons.
