MAN POLICE KILLED IN STANDOFF HAD TAKEN COCAINE

Toxicology reports show Gary Wayne West had cocaine in his bloodstream the September morning he was shot to death by Roanoke police.

The 35-year-old Floyd County man, reportedly upset over his failed relationship with his girlfriend, held police at bay with a shotgun for two hours on Williamson Road the morning of Sept.18. Police say West was shot and killed by four officers when he pointed the gun at a police lieutenant.

Roanoke Commonwealth's Attorney Don Caldwell received the toxicology results Wednesday and said he expects to release his evaluation of West's shooting next week. Caldwell said tests indicate West had not been drinking when he died.
