ALPHIN, Gladys Haymaker, 84, of Buena Vista, formerly of Naples, Fla., died Wednesday, October 19, 1994 at Shenandoah Valley Health Care Facility. Born December 8, 1909 in Botetourt County, Va., she was the daughter of the late James David Haymaker and Mary Virginia Cummings. Mrs. Alphin was a retired secretary for Virginia Military Institute and was a member of Timber Ridge (Old Stone) Presbyterian Church. Surviving are three sisters, Eunice Tyree, Lexington, Nellie Wheeler, Charlotte, N. C., Anna Belle Larew, Verona; two brothers, Rev. John Haymaker, Stuarts Draft, C. B. Haymaker, Roanoke. Graveside services will be conducted Friday, October 21, 1994 at 3 p.m. in Rockbridge Memorial Gardens, with the Rev. Dan Malcolm officiating. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorials to the Timber Ridge Presbyterian Church. The family will receive friends from 1 to 2 p.m. Friday at Harrison Funeral Home, Lexington.

BOHON, Nannie Elizabeth, (Nancy), 66, of Roanoke, died, Wednesday, October 19, 1994, at her home. She is survived by her husband, Stilton Chapman Bohon; one son, Thomas Owen Bohon of Marion; her mother, Annie Elizabeth Dalton of Gretna; one sister, Carrie Lilly of Highpoint, N.C.; nine brothers, Gordon E. COTTRELL, Robert Louis Sr., (``Buddy''), 64, of Roanoke, passed away Wednesday, October 19, 1994, at his residence. He worked in furniture sales for many years; and was a driver for Abbott Bus Lines. Survivors include his wife, Geraldine Morgan Cottrell; one son and daughter-in-law, Bobby L. LAFON, Anna Kyle, 66, of New Castle, (Sinking Creek Valley), went home to be with her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ at her home Wednesday evening, October 19, 1994. Born in Craig County, Va., she was a daughter of the late Walter D. and Rosa Kyle Trout Saunders. She was a member of the Lighthouse Baptist Church at Radford, Va. She is survived by her beloved husband, Andrew Thomas Lafon; a daughter and son-in-law, Vickie and Larry Johnston, New Castle; two grandchildren and spouses, Laurie and Jeff Kirk, Christiansburg, and Trudy and Travis Collins, Pembroke; a great-grandson, Cody Hayes Collins, Pembroke; three brothers, Darnell Saunders and Minor Saunders, both of Newport and Burell Saunders, Chesapeake, Va.; four sisters, Virginia Dowdy, Pembroke, Ruby Saunders, Newport, Delsie Alls, Blacksburg, and Christine Nuckols, Richmond; and numerous nieces and nephews. MAYS, Ester Mildred, 73, of Vesuvius, died Wednesday, October 19, 1994, at her residence. She was born in Rockbridge County on August 31, 1921, the daughter of the late William H. Wood Sr. and Arie Pultz Wood. She was a member of the Mount Zion Presbyterian Church. She was preceded in death by a daughter, Cathy Jean Mays, in August, 1952. She is survived by her husband, Herbert V. Mays; three sons, Franklin E. Mays and Jerry B. Mays, both of Buena Vista, David B. Mays of Fairfield; four daughters, Lois Virginia Troxell, Donna E. Reid, Judy Ann Reid, all of Vesuvius, Pauline J. MILLS, Abraham L., (``Abe''), 80, of Blacksburg, departed this life on Wednesday, October 19, 1994, at Roanoke Memorial Hospital. Mr. Mills was born on April 7, 1914, to the late Gordon T. and Anna Young Mills. He was the tenth child of twelve children born to that union. Mr. Mills was a lifetime resident of Blacksburg, Virginia where he was employed for many years at the Power Plant in Radford, Virginia and the Rock Quarry in Elliott, Virginia. Mr. Mills loved and enjoyed farm life. He is survived by his sister, Lucille M. Page of Cleveland, Ohio and brother, Harris W. Mills of Blacksburg, Virginia; a special niece-in-law, Brenda Trussell, Blacksburg and a host of nephews, nieces, relatives and friends. Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, October 22, 1994, at the Clay Street Baptist Church with the Rev. Robert Jones and the Rev. Frank Paige and the Rev. Dewey O. MILLS, Thomas J., (``Tommy''), 81, of Roanoke, died Thursday, October 20, 1994, at the Veterans Administration Medical Center, Salem. He was an Army veteran of World War II, and a member of Evangel Four Square Church. Surviving are his wife, Audrey Stump Mills; a son, Robert Mills, Radford; one granddaughter; two stepsons, Clarence Stump, Roanoke, James Stump, Catawba; five stepgrandchildren; a brother, Harry Mills, Roanoke; a sister, Margaret Dilos, Upper Darby, Pa. PENDLETON, John Davis, 82, of Blacksburg, died Wednesday, October 19, 1994 at Heritage Hall Nursing Home after a long illness. He was born in Pasquotank County, N.C. on September 30, 1912 to the late George W. and Estelle D. Pendleton. He received a B.S. degree in Chemical Engineering from N. C. State College in 1935, a M.S. degree in Soil Chemistry from Rutgers University in 1939 and a PH.D. in Soil Chemistry from Cornell in 1950. He was on the agronomy faculty at V.P.I. and S.U. from 1946 - 1977, where he was known affectionately by his students as ``Dr. John"". He was a member of the Blacksburg Baptist Church, serving for several years as the superintendent of the Youth Sunday School Deparment and he also served as a Deacon. He was a member of Lion's Club, the American Legion, and several professional and honor societies. From 1941 - 1945, he served in the U. S. Army in the 116th Evacuation Hospital Unit in Central Europe and was awarded the Bronze Star for meritorious service in direct support of combat operations in France and Germany. He was preceded in death by an infant daughter. He is survived by his wife, Mary Robeson Pendleton. Also surviving is a stepdaughter, Ann Wood Corson, Phoenix, Ariz.; four daughters, Helen Davis Pendleton, San Diego, Calif., Carolyn Ragir, Palo Alta, Calif, Alice Miller, Acton, Mass., Dorothy Mize, Crescent City, Calif; five grandchildren; two sisters, Mariette Carolus, East Lansing, Mich., Loue McPherson, Galax; and numerous nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be held Saturday, October 22, 1994 at 11 a.m. in the Blacksburg Baptist Church, with Dr. Ray Allen and Dr. Tom Reynolds officiating. Burial will follow in Westview Cemetery. PETTIT, Robert Edward, (``Bob''), 82, of Pearisburg, died Wednesday, October 19, 1994, following a long illness. Mr. Pettit was a retired employee of the Nolen Co., a member of the Pearisburg Kiwanis Club since 1982 and was awarded the Kiwanis Distinguished Service Award in 1994. He served the Kiwanis Club as President twice, as Lieutenant Governor of Capitol District. In 1985 he received the Man of the Year Award from the Giles County Chamber of Commerce. Besides his Kiwanis acti vities he was a member of the Men's Interdominational Prayer Breakfast of the Pearisburg First United Methodist Church. He was a member of the Pearisburg First United Methodist Church and a member of the Pop Finley Sunday School Class. He was a charter member of the Pearisburg Vol. Fire Department. Mr. Pettit was born in Giles County on August 6, 1912 and was a son of the late Charles Webster Pettit and Alma Woods Pettit. He was preceded in death by his wife Frances Spencer Pettit. He is survived by one son, Robert E. Pettit Jr. of Collinsville, Va.; one daughter, Mrs. Alma Pettit Skidmore of Chesterfield County; one sister, Virginia Pettit Bowers of Thomasville, N. C.; four grandchildren. Funeral services will be conducted Saturday, October 22, 1994, at 11 a.m. in the Pearisburg First United Church with the Rev. Freddrick Long officiating with interment in Birchlawn Burial Park, Pearisburg. The family will receive friends at the Givens Funeral Home Friday from 6 to 8:30 p.m.

RIFFEY, Louise Bobbitt, 77, of Chilhowie, died Thursday, October 20, 1994, in the Smyth County Community Hospital, Marion. She was the widow of Floyd E. Riffey and a member of the Chilhowie Christian Church. Survivors include special friends and several nieces and nephews. SEAY, Viva Alexander, 83, of Mineral, died Wednesday, October 19, 1994. SNIDER, Anna Belle Sarver, 64, of Roanoke, passed away Thursday, October 20, 1994, at her home. She was the widow of Fred A. Snider and a member of First Christian Church. Mrs. Snider was a member of the Williamson Road Chapter of the Order of the Eastern Star #119. In 1974, Mrs. Snider was one of the first women to join the Hollins Volunteer Fire Department and Rescue Squad. She served as the squad's chaplain from 1985 - 1994. She was made a life member in 1987 and was named Crew Member of The Year in 1991. Surviving are her sons and daughter-in-law, Wesley Daniel (Danny) and Naomi T. Snider, Roanoke, Larry Fred Snider and fiance, Janet Murphy, Ohio; daughter and son-in-law, Teresa S. and Bobby Perdue, Boones Mill; six grandchildren; one great-grandchild; brothers and sister-in-law, Marvin Sarver, Newport, Alvin and Evelyn Sarver, Christiansburg; brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Wesley and Betty Snider, Christiansburg. WILKES, James Ray, 75, of Route 4, Bedford, passed away on Wednesday, October 19, 1994, in the Veterans Administration Hospital, Salem, VA. He was born February 13, 1919 in Bedford County, a son of the late James Duffel Wilkes and Zulie Murphy Wilkes. He was a veteran of World War II and was a member of the Mentow Masonic Lodge # 108. He is survived by his wife, Lena Sculthrop Wilkes; four sons, M. Ralph Wilkes, Forest, Ray Steward Wilkes, Vincent Miller Wilkes, both of Roanoke, Emery B. WILMORE, Curtis Reese, 62, of Culpeper, died Wednesday, October 19, 1994 at University of Virginia Hospital, Charlottesville. Born in Rockbridge Co., September 2, 1932, he was the son of the late David Henry Wilmore and Mary Margaret Turner Wilmore. Mr. Wilmore was retired as an Assistant Special Agent in Charge with the Virginia State Police, and was a member of the Elliotts Hill United Methodist Church and Little Joe Hunt Club. He was also a past member of Culpeper Lions and Ruritan Club. Surviving are his wife, Polly C. Wilmore, Culpeper, Daughter, Patricia Wilmore Vakos, Fredericksburg; son, Curtis Todd Wilmore, Staunton; brother, Kenneth Reid Wilmore, Botetourt County.
