EARNINGS

Tultex

Tultex Corp., Martinsville maker of activewear and sports apparel, reported net income of $7.4 million, or 24 cents per share, for its third quarter ended Oct. 1, compared with $4.7 million, or 15 cents per share, a year earlier. Sales were $208.9 million, up from $187.1 million a year ago. For the nine months, Tultex reported a net loss of $548,000, equal to 5 cents per share, compared to net income of $3.7 million, or 10 cents per share, a year earlier. Sales were $397.1 million compared to $378.4 million.

General Electric

General Electric Co., Fairfield, Conn., parent of the drive-systems factory in Salem, reported third-quarter net income of $1.37 billion, or 80 cents per share, compared with $1.21 billion, or 71 cents a share, a year earlier. Revenues rose to $16.15 billion from last year's $14.86 billion. For the nine months, earnings were $3.96 billion, or $2.32 a share, compared with $3.63 billion, or $2.12 a share. Revenues were $46.53 billion compared to $42.48 billion.

Kollmorgen

Kollmorgen Corp., Waltham, Mass., parent of Inland Motor and Industrial Drives in Radford, reported net income of $175,000, compared to profit of $1.7 million a year earlier. Sales were $46.4 million, compared to $46.8 million. For the nine months, net income was $2.2 million, or 5 cents per share, on sales of $140.3 million, nearly unchanged from a year earlier.

BellSouth

BellSouth Corp., Atlanta parent of BellSouth Communication Systems of Roanoke, reported third-quarter net income of $499.5 million, or $1.01 per share, on revenues of $4.20 billion, compared to year-earlier net income of $434.6 million, or 88 cents per share, on revenues of $4.01 billion. For the nine months, net income was $1.60 billion, or $3.22 per share, on revenues of $12.45 billion, compared with year-earlier net income of $1.16 billion, or $2.33 per share, on revenue of $11.76 billion.
