THE TIP OFF

FASHION FLAIR: Glitter, glow, glamour and glitz will be going on at the Holiday Inn Hotel Tanglewood, 8 p.m., Thursday, as the 37th annual Ebony Fashion Fair rolls into Roanoke on one of its alternate-year visits. Twelve dazzling models will don and display more than 200 designer garments and accessories from the likes of Yves Saint Laurent, Oscar de la Renta, Valentino, Bob Mackie, Fabrice and Bruce Oldfield. The fashions - personally selected and coordinated by Fashion Fair producer, director/Ebony magazine matriarch Eunice W. Johnson - forecast scads of sparkle, shine and shimmer, even in leathers and plaids.

The $20 ticket price benefits the Young Adults Organization of St. Paul United Methodist Church Building Fund and includes a subscription to Ebony, EM or Jet magazine. For tickets or information, call Diann Clark, 362-5528 or Gloria Jernigan, 362-0406.

POET AND KNOW IT?: Come prepared to participate in a poetry reading of your own works Sunday, 3 p.m., in the Brody Room of the Roanoke City Public Library, Jefferson Street. The free event is hosted by the American Association of University Women, Pen Women of America, The Poetry Society of Virginia and The Writer's Club of Virginia.

CONTEMPORARY CHRISTIAN: A stimulating assortment of fairly new but very talented musical artists will perform at 7:30 tonight at Salem Baptist Church, 103 N. Broad St., Salem. Headlining will be Randy Phillips, Shawn Craig and Dan Dean, of Phillips, Craig and Dean. The trio's self-titled debut album scored four No.-1 singles, including "Favorite Song of All," and their single, "The Concert of the Age," from their new release, "Lifeline," is rapidly gaining acclaim.

Singer/songwriter Cheri Keaggy's title single from her debut album, "Child of the Father," is already No. 1 on the CCM Update CCM 25 chart and the Christian Research Report Adult Contemporary Chart. And Brian Barrett's self-titled debut album, which includes "Bow Now," has received highly favorable reviews.

Tickets, available at The Baptist Bookstore and the Family Bookstore in Roanoke, and New Life Books and Gifts, Lynchburg, Blacksburg and Christiansburg, are $6 in advance; $7 at the door. The concert is sponsored by Spirit FM 90.3 radio, 774-9798.

SONGS OF THE '60S: During the 1960s, the Kingston Trio was one of the top vocal groups in the world, with record sales and concert draws rivaled only by the Beatles'. On Oct. 29, at 8 p.m. at the Roanoke Civic Center, original trio members Bob Shane and Nick Reynolds and 18-year member George Grove, will re-create some of their famous songs.

The group's hits include "The Tijuana Jail," "Scotch and Soda," "Raspberries, Strawberries," "Where Have All The Flowers Gone?" "A Worried Man," and "Tom Dooley.

Tickets are $15 and $11 and may be purchased at the civic center and Ticketmaster outlets or by calling 951-8427 in the New River Valley; 846-8100 in Lynchburg; or 343-8100 in all other areas.

DEITIES' DANCE: Elegba, the gatekeeper, is one of the saints of the Yoruba culture of West Africa. On Oct. 28, 8 p.m., in the Babcock Auditorium of Sweet Briar College, the Elegba Folklore Society, like its namesake, will through music, costumes, stories, songs and audience call-and-response open the gates to introduce its audience to traditional West African dance and culture.

Tickets are $6 adults; $3 students or senior citizens; children under age 12, free. Call (804) 381-6120.

ORGAN DONOR: Organist Cj Sambach, through special lectures and demonstrations, donates a lot of energy to interesting young people in organ music. But his widely acclaimed "informances" inform, entertain and delight audiences of all ages.

Tonight at 7:30 at Calvary Baptist Church, West Campbell Avenue at Sixth Street, Roanoke, Sambach will present his free organ recital, which was cancelled in February because of an ice storm. The concert is sponsored by Calvary Baptist and the Roanoke Chapter of the American Guild of Organists.

For information, call 342-4224.
