AKERS, Louise Virginia Bromfield, 73, of Christiansburg, died Thursday evening, October 20, 1994, in Montgomery Regional Hospital. She was preceded in death by her husband, Dewey A. Akers and a daughter, Nancy Lee Akers. She is survived by one son and daughter-in-law, Charles W. and Maria Akers, Roanoke; four daughters and sons-in-law, Barbara A. and Richard E. Clowers, Richmond, Betty A. and James H. Costigan, Christiansburg, Rebecca A. and Sammy R. Smith, Newport, Sandra A. and Daniel L. Chinault, Indian Valley; 15 grandchildren; and several great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be 1 p.m. Sunday, October 23, at the Richardson-Horne Funeral Home Chapel conducted by the Rev. Richard Kingrea with burial in Sunset Cemetery. Friends may call anytime Saturday at the Richardson-Horne Funeral Home where the family will receive friends from 6 until 8 Saturday evening.

BAXTER, George E., of Washington, D.C., formerly of Roanoke, departed this life on Tuesday, October 18, 1994. He leaves to mourn, his wife, Mrs. Theresa Baxter; one son, Vaun Thomas, Washington, D.C.; three brothers, Lawrence Baxter, Sonny Baxter, both of Roanoke, and Theodore Baxter, Petersburg; four sisters, Hazel Clark, Washington, D.C., Alease Anderson, Addie Andrews and Louise Styles, all of Roanoke; two brothers-in-law, Rev. Willie Andrews and Franklin Styles, both of Roanoke; three sisters-in-law, Eva Baxter, Petersburg, Elizabeth Baxter and Frances Baxter both of Roanoke; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and many friends. Funeral services will be held Monday, October 24, 1994 at the Hamlar-Curtis Chapel at 12 noon with Dr. Kenneth B. Wright officiating . Burial will follow at Williams Memorial Park, Roanoke. BROADY, Lonnie Johnson, 92, of 1543 Golfside Ave., NW, Roanoke, passed away Thursday, October 20, 1994, unexpectedly, at her home. She was the widow of Frank C. Broady Sr. She was a Deaconess at High Street Baptist Church and a member of the Philathea Sunday School Class. One son, Frank C. Broady Jr. preceded her in death by several years. Survivors include her daughters and sons, Mrs. Lucille (Harry) Lee, Rev. Ulas N. (Delois) Broady, Mrs. Mary B. Brown, all of Roanoke, Mrs. Laura (Ben) Robinson, Durham, N.C., Mrs. Lyndon (Gilbert) Owens, Landover, Md., Richard H. Broady, Roanoke, Mrs. Agnes Brown, Landover, Md., Mrs. Annie B. (William) Gravely, Roanoke, and Rev. Braxton (Cecilia) Broady, Charleston, W.Va.; daughter-in-law, Mrs. Marie Broady, Roanoke; 19 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren; niece, Mrs. Mattie Redcross, Williamsburg; other relatives and many friends. Funeral services will be held Tuesday, October 25, 1994 at 1 p.m., High Street Baptist Church with Dr. Noel C. Taylor officiating and burial in Williams Memorial Park. DEAN, James W., Sr., 78, of Roanoke, passed away Thursday, October 20, 1994, in a local hospital. He was retired from Associated Transport and United Ambulance Service. Mr. Dean was a 46 year member of Roanoke Moose Lodge #284 and a life member of Blue Ridge Moose Legion #82. Surviving are his devoted wife of 55 years, Virginia R. Dean; son and daughter-in-law, James W., Jr. and Carolyn Dean, of Roanoke; daughter and son-in-law, Lynette Sue and Melvin Boyd, of Richmond; grandson, Christopher Dean, of Roanoke; step granddaughter, Dee Boyd, of Richmond; half sister, Helen D. Ingram, of Max Meadows; many nieces and nephews. The family suggests that memorials be made to Roanoke Emergency Medical Services, 374 Day Ave., Roanoke, Va. 24016. A graveside service will be conducted, 1 p.m. Monday in Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens by the Rev. Frank W. Feather. Grave rites will be presented by the Loyal Order of the Moose, Lodge #284. DOWDY, Lorenzo Ludwell, (``Doggie''), 73, of Vinton, passed away Thursday, October 20, 1994, at his home. He served in the U.S. Air Force as a fighter pilot instructor during World War II, served as vice president of Graves-Humphreys, Inc. for many years and was a life long member of Vinton Baptist Church, where he previously served as deacon. He was also involved for many years with the Masonic Lodge, was a past president of Sales & Marketing Executives of the Roanoke Valley. He was preceded in death by a son, Mark Taylor Dowdy. He is survived by his wife, Lucille Hale Dowdy; a son, Larry Downs Dowdy, Brentwood, Tenn.; two daughters, Pamela Fawcett, Virginia Beach, Priscilla Self, Vinton; five grandsons; five granddaughters; three great-granddaughters; one sister, Evelyn Neeley, Williamsburg; a brother, Tyree H. Dowdy, Roanoke. Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Monday, October 24, 1994, from the Lotz Vinton Chapel. Dr. Bill Ross will officiate. Burial to follow in Mountain View Cemetery. Graveside services by Vinton Masonic Lodge #204 A.F. & A.M. The family will receive friends from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home. FIELDER, Claudia Stanley, 86, of Bedford County, passed away Friday, October 21, 1994. She is survived by five sons, Raymond O. Fielder, Vinton, Gary Wayne Fielder, Roanoke, Stanley E. Fielder, Bedford County, Jimmy D. (Buck) Fielder, Salem, Roy H. Fielder, Roanoke; also surviving are a number of grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild. HALE, Eula, (``Granny''), 102, of Dunbar, W.Va., died Wednesday, October 19, 1994, in St. Albans, W.Va. after a long illness. She was a former Post Master and Manager of the Country Store, Waiteville, W.Va. She was a member of Waiteville (WV) Christian Church. She was a successful business woman and farmer. She was native of Craig County, Virginia. Surviving are sons, Ray W. Hale of Waiteville, W.Va., Charles W. Hale Jr. of Roanoke, Vernon E. ``Buddy'' Hale of Dunbar, W.Va.; daughters, Pauline Williams of Galax, Va., Ruby Radford, Dunbar, W.Va. Mrs. Hale is also survived by 13 grandchildren; 23 great-grandchildren; nine great-great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be held Saturday, October 22, 1994, at Union Church in Waiteville, W.Va. with Rev. Linkie Carter officiating. Burial will be in New Zion Cemetery, Waiteville, W.Va.

HALL, Ida Hall, 98, of Rocky Mount, of Eldercare, formerly of Fieldale, died Thursday, October 20, 1994 at Eldercare. Born in Patrick County, March 5, 1986, she was the daughter of the late Marshall and Virginia Louise Hall. She was the widow of Aubrey S. Hall. She attended Ferrum College, retired from Fieldcrest Mills with 18 years service, and was a member of Valley Drive Baptist Church, where she was a Sunday School teacher and choir member. Surviving are her daughter and son-in-law, Irene H. and Cecil Truman of Hardy; three sons and daughters-in-law, Winfred M. and Bonnie Hall of Bassett, Alfred Lee and Betty Hall of Newport News, Dexter B. and Faye Hall of Fieldale; six grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandson. A funeral service will be held Saturday at 2 p.m. at Collins Funeral Chapel, Bassett, with the Rev. Bobby Rakes and the Rev. Tracy Freeman officiating. Interment will follow in Roselawn Burial Park.

HOPKINS, Jacquelyn Gilmer, 85, of Route 7, Bedford, died Wednesday, October 19, 1994 at her residence. She was born in Lebanon, Virginia on September 16, 1909, a daughter of the late William Cunningham Gilmer, and Nancy Anne Jessee Gilmer. She was the widow of John Walter Hopkins Jr. She taught school in Bedford for many years, was an active member of Main Street United Methodist Church, was a charter member of Bedford Book Forum, and was an avid gardener. She is survived by her sons and daughters-in-law, Walter C. and Susan Hopkins, Stewartsville, Edward B. and Karen Hopkins, Bedford; daughters and sons-in-law, Nancy H. and Ed Lloyd, Elizabeth H. and Jerald Stewartson, all of Bedford; a sister, Ruth Gilmer Ballard, Bedford; 12 grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and many beloved nieces and nephews. Memorial services will be conducted Sunday, October 23, 1994 at 2 p.m. at Main Street United Methodist Church with the Rev. D. Glen Langston officiating. MARSHALL, Thelma Fudge, 82, of Winchester and formerly of Bedford Co. died Thursday, October 20, 1994. She was a retired registered nurse, having graduated from Shenandoah Hospital School of Nursing and was a former member of Parrish Chapel United Methodist Church. She was the widow of John Clarke Marshall and is survived by many longtime family and friends, including Lois Overstreet Gray, Virginia Beach. Graveside services will be held in Mountain View Cemetery, Vinton 11 a.m. Monday, with the Rev. David Elks officiating. Friends may call at Oakey's Vinton Chapel after 11 a.m. Sunday.

MILGRIM, R. Byrd, 77, of Route 2, Wytheville, died Thursday, October 20, 1994, in the Wythe County Community Hospital. He was born in Inman, Va., the son of the late Frederick J. and Lydia Carico Milgrim. He came with his family in the 1920's and remained in Wytheville all his life. He was a local businessman as owner of the Triangle Exxon Service Station. A heart attack forced him into early retirement and the remainder of his life was spent doing what he liked best, farming and enjoying the sight of wildlife. Byrd was a member of the Wytheville Volunteer Fire Department for thirty-six years and during part of that time, served as their treasurer. He was also a member of the Wytheville Masonic Lodge No. 82, A. F. & A. M. and was preceded in death by his wife, Lucille Vaughan Milgrim. He is survived by one sister, Lillian Milgrim Mason, Wytheville; three nephews and wives, Fred J. and Sara Mason, William F. and Pat Milgrim, all of Roanoke, John M. Milgrim, Fairfax; one sister-in-law, Amy Milgrim, Wytheville; a special friend, James A. ``Pepsi"" Waller, Wytheville. Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Saturday, October 22, 1994, at the Barnett Funeral Chapel with the Rev. Henry Horton officiating. Interment will follow in the West End Cemetery. The Wytheville Masonic Lodge No. 82, A. F. & A. M. conducted a masonic memorial service at 8 p.m. Friday, October 21, 1994. MORGAN, Emmett, 83, of Salem, passed away Wednesday, October 19, 1994. He was born in Bedford, Va. He was a member of First Baptist Church of Salem. Mr. Morgan was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers and one sister. Survivors include his wife, Lottie Morgan; three daughters, Joanne Morgan, Roanoke, Mary Taylor and Phyllis Jones, both of Salem; daughter-in-law, Sharon Griffin, Salem; eight grandchildren, David Jr., Denise, Michael, Billy and Angelia Jones, Lamont, April and Jerome Griffin; five great-grandchildren; a devoted nephew and his wife, Harry and Gwendolyn Morgan of Roanoke; a devoted niece, Dorothy Morgan, Athens Tenn.; a devoted sister-in-law, Lillie Morgan; many other sisters-in-law, brothers-in-law; host of nieces, nephews and o ther relatives; and a special friend of the family, Stephan Welcher. Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Monday, October 24, 1994, at First Baptist Church of Salem, Va., with the Dr. J. A. Braxton officiating. POPE, Lola Wilson, 69, of Port Richey, Florida, and formerly of Bedford County, passed away Wednesday, October 20, 1994. She was born August 28, 1925, in Bedford County, a daughter of the late James Wilson and Ethel Morgan Wilson. Her husband was the late Herbert Pope. She is survived by four brothers, Fred Wilson, Smith Mountain Lake; Linwood Wilson, Lynchburg, Alvin Wilson, San Diego, Calif., Everett Wilson, Roanoke; several nieces and nephews. Graveside services will be conducted Sunday, October 23, 1994 at 2 p.m. from the Morgans' Baptist Church Cemetery. Visitation will begin after 4 p.m. today at Updike Funeral Home, Bedford, where the family will receive friends from 7 to 8:30 p.m.

WILSON, Mary Evelyn, 80, of Bedford, passed away Thursday, October 20, 1994, in the Bedford County Memorial Hospital. She was born July 20, 1914, in Bedford County, a daughter of the late William Thomas Pollard and Mary Emma Claytor Wilson. She was a retired nurses aid, was a member of the Tuesday Club and also of the Bethesda United Methodist Church. She is survived by her husband, Victor Ordway Wilson, Bedford; a son, Thomas Neal Wilson, Norfolk; a daughter and son-in-law, Patricia W. and W. S. Williams Jr., Bedford; a brother, Wendell Holmes Pollard, Newport News; three grandchildren, Neal Dylan Wilson, Danville, Sarah Page Williams, Michael Sunkon Williams, both of Bedford. Funeral services will be conducted Sunday, October 23, 1994 at 3 p.m. from the Bethesda United Methodist Church, by the Rev. Bob Maas. Interment will follow in the church cemetery.
