IN SERVICE

Marine 1st Lt. KEITH FRANTZ, son of Nevin Frantz and Sally Jo Frantz of Blacksburg, is one of 2,000 Marine Corps and 6,000 Navy members patrolling the waters just miles off the coast of Haiti. Frantz is on board the USS Wasp, homeported in Norfolk. The USS Wasp is the largest amphibious assault ship in the world.

Navy Seaman CHARLES DIRICO, son of Steve DiRico and Debbie DiRico of Christiansburg, has completed basic training at Naval Training Center, Great Lakes, Ill. DiRico has reported for duty in San Diego, Calif.

Air Force Airman CYNTHIA D. MOORE, daughter of Brenda M. Cox of Dublin, has graduated from basic training at Lackland Air Force Base, San Antonio, Texas.

Air Force Airman DEREK A. RUPE, son of Mary G. Franklin of Dublin, has graduated from basic training at Lackland Air Force Base, San Antonio, Texas.

Air Force Airman RICHARD L. GRUBB, son of Donald L. Grubb of Christiansburg and Linda G. Snider of Dublin, has graduated from basic training at Lackland Air Force Base, San Antonio, Texas.

Marine Pfc. JAMES R. LEECH, son of Wayne and Sara Leech of Elliston, has completed the antenna and cable system installation and maintenance specialist course at Sheppard Air Force Base, Wichita Falls, Texas.

Navy Lt. DONALD T. ALLERTON, a former resident of Radford, is halfway through a six-month deployment to the Mediterranean Sea and Indian Ocean aboard the amphibious assault ship USS Guam. Allerton in one of 2,000 sailors and 2,200 Marines of the four-ship USS Guam Amphibious Ready Group, which departed Norfolk in May.

Marine Cpl. SHAWN A. BREWER, son of Marlene J. Brewer and Arva L. Brewer Sr. of Floyd, recently received a Meritorious Mast. Brewer was cited for superior individual performance while assigned with Marine Attack Training Squadron 203, 2nd Marine Aircraft Wing, Marine Corps Air Station, Cherry Point, N.C.

Air Force Tech. Sgt. JEFFREY L. HARRIMAN, formerly a resident of Pulaski County, graduated from an Air Force major command noncommissioned officer academy at Kapaun Air Station, Kaiserslautern, Germany. Harriman is an assistant munitions maintenance officer assigned at Camp Darby, Italy.

Air Force ROTC 2nd Lt. BRIAN T. ZEMAN, son of Thomas B. and Sheila D. Zeman of Riner, has earned a degree in horticulture from Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University and commissioned to his present rank.

Air Force Airman JAMES G. WRIGHT, son of retired Senior Chief Petty Officer Harry L. and Nancy L. Wright of Pulaski, has completed the aircraft structural maintenance specialist course at Sheppard Air Force Base, Wichita Falls, Texas.

Army 2nd Lt. MICHAEL J. PATE, son of James A. and Michaela A. Pate of Blacksburg, is one of 1,300 soliders recently deployed with the U.S. Army's 1st Cavalry Division to fight wild fires raging near Missoula, Mont., and at the Idaho National Forest near Boise. Pate is stationed at Fort Hood, Killeen, Texas.
