MAN, 83, KILLED IN BOTETOURT CRASH

An 83-year-old Fairfield man was killed Friday afternoon in Botetourt County when his wife fell asleep at the wheel and their car ran off the road.

Francis Carlisle Gilkeson was a passenger in a car driven by his wife, Mattie M. Gilkeson, according to a state police report.

The couple was traveling on U.S. 11 just north of Virginia T1319 around 2 p.m. when Mattie Gilkeson apparently fell asleep, the report said. The car ran off the right side of the road and struck several trees.

Francis Gilkeson was taken to Roanoke Memorial Hospital, where he died around 5 p.m., according to the report. Mattie Gilkeson was listed in satisfactory condition at the hospital Friday night.
