RADIO VETERANS RECALL `ROOSTER'

Some longtime New River Valley broadcasters reminisced this week about local broadcasting legend LEWIS S. "ROOSTER" KANODE JR., 67, who died after he was struck by a train late Monday. Kanode, the self-proclaimed "Mayor of Coal Bank Hollow," entertained Valley listeners for 30 years on Christiansburg's WBCR - later WJJJ (1260 AM).

Ralph Stewart of WJJJ remembered an occasion in the late 1970s when the station ran its annual Thanksgiving turkey-calling contest. Listeners who called in were eligible for prizes. "One day, Lewis ran the contest and no one called in," Stewart recalled, and announcer Dick Boekeloo - who followed Kanode on the air and got plenty of calls - chided Kanode about having no listeners. "But what had happened was that so many calls came in that it locked up the phone system," Stewart said. "Dick found out but didn't tell Lewis until the next year."

Jim Roberts, early morning announcer on Radford's WRAD (1460 AM), was Kanode's on-air competitor for many years. "He'd be on one side of the hill and I'd be on the other," he said this week, adding that he didn't really consider Kanode as a rival. "Hopefully, we each got our share of the audience."

WRAD-WRIQ newsman Bob Thomas recalled interviewing Kanode, who talked about his days at WBCR-WJJJ and earlier at WRAD - and about meeting Elvis and the Colonel - during one of the stations' remote broadcasts in Christiansburg recently. "It was wonderful," Thomas said. "He was a delightful man." Thomas said now he wishes he'd recorded the interview for posterity. "That was the last time I saw him."
