SALVATION ARMY HAS BEGUN ITS CHRISTMAS EFFORTS

THE SALVATION ARMY - marking 75 years in the New River Valley this year - has begun its efforts to help the less fortunate this Christmas season. Last year, the Salvation Army's programs helped nearly 700 New River Valley families. The non-denominational ministry seeks volunteers - groups, church, business and civic clubs, schools and individuals - to help with its Adopt-a-Kettle, Stocking Shop, Cans for Kids and Angel Tree programs.

Fairlawn Church of God, Peppers Ferry Road (Virginia 114), Fairlawn commemorates its 20th year with the week-long HOMECOMING 94 Sunday through Oct. 30. The Rev. Keith Gunter, state overseer for the Church of God, speaks Sunday at the 11 a.m. worship. Dinner follows at 12:30 p.m. in the fellowship hall. The Sounds of Victory minister in song at 2 p.m. There is no night service Sunday.

Monday and Tuesday, the Rev. Dr. T.L. Lowery and associates hold services at 10:30 a.m., noon, and 7 p.m. Wednesday through Friday, the Rev. In an effort to stem a growing sense of polarization within society, Blacksburg Presbyterian Church, Church and Eakin streets, has begun a midweek study of contemporary issues. The group - open to all - meets Wednesday evenings at 7:30 through Nov. 9. The Rev. Cameron Murchison, moderates. 552-2504.

The Rev. Joe Burton, pastor of First Baptist Church, Radford, has been re-elected chairman of the Bluefield College Board of Trustees. Burton is a 1965 graduate of the school.

Lewis Mikell and Larry Phillips of Church of Christ, 1250 S. Franklin St., Christiansburg, are in Ukraine to teach the gospel.

Construction on a Habitat for Humanity house in Christiansburg now is set to begin Saturday, Oct. 29. Several New River Valley and Roanoke Valley Presbyterian congregations have joined forces to finance the project and provide volunteers.

Christiansburg United Christian Aid needs good clothing - especially warm jackets and small-size jeans and tops - for needy school-aged youngsters.
