BACKFIELD DUO DRIVES PULASKI

Davis & Webb sounds like the name of a small school, perhaps a Division III college football team.

But Friday night, Davis & Webb looked like Heisman Trophy contenders, automatic first-round NFL draft picks.

Running backs Tim Davis and Eric Webb compiled gaudy statistics as the Pulaski County High School football team overpowered William Fleming 51-19 on the Cougars' field.

The Cougars, the top-ranked team in Timesland, raised their record to 6-1 overall, 2-0 in the Roanoke Valley District. Fleming fell to 1-6, 0-1.

The biggest unanswered question was which Pulaski back played a better game?

Davis had three touchdowns; Webb contributed two. Davis averaged 19 rushing yards a carry; Webb netted nearly eight. Webb had another 44-yard score nullified by a Pulaski holding penalty; Davis thwarted a Fleming drive with an interception in the end zone.

Fleming moved the ball against Pulaski, scoring three times, picking up 17 first downs and gaining more than 300 total yards. The Colonels even briefly held a first-quarter lead (7-6).

But the Colonels could not stop Pulaski's offense. Pulaski scored every time it touched the ball, save one missed 51-yard field goal attempt by strong-legged Shayne Graham.

Pulaski's offense was so potent that the Cougars scored their first two touchdowns without the benefit of a first down. The Cougars duplicated the feat in the second half, when Jamar McNair scooped up a fumbled kickoff return 20 yards for a score, and reserve back David Conner scooted 49 yards on the first play from scrimmage after a Colonel TD.

Fleming's heralded running back, Daniel Gunn, was effective, gaining 147 yards on 24 carries, and quarterback Shannon Wilson completed five of his first six passes.

But Fleming seemed to lose its fire when Davis intercepted Wilson's end zone pass early in the second quarter. At the time, Fleming trailed just 12-7 and was in the midst of a brilliant18-play drive.

After the interception, Davis carried 49 yards on a handoff from Pulaski quarterback Andre Eaves. Six plays later, Davis scored from two yards out. Webb added the two-point conversion, and in three minutes, Pulaski went from potentially trailing to leading 20-7.

Graham added a 42-yard field goal late in the first half to give the Cougars a 16-point edge at intermission.

Fleming never got any closer, as Pulaski opened the second half with a six-play, 52-yard scoring drive that effectively sealed the game. Webb did most of the damage, with carries of 12, 15, and 7 yards, the last burst putting him in the end zone.

Pulaski only passed three times in the game. Eaves completed two of his passes, one each to Davis and Webb.
