HIGHLANDERS TURN TURNOVERS INTO WIN

Glenvar capitalized on five Parry McCluer turnovers, as the Highlanders shut out the Fighting Blues 9-0 in a Pioneer District game Friday night at Glenvar.

Highlanders running back Lynn Twine fumbled on the Parry McCluer 3-yard line, but Glenvar center Casey Mills pounced on the ball, scoring the lone touchdown of the game.

Brian Eads iced the victory for the Highlanders (4-3 overall, 2-1 in the district) in the fourth quarter when he kicked a field goal from 14 yards.

Eric East gained 133 yards on 27 carries for Glenvar as he reached the 1,000-yard plateau for the season.

Parry McCluer is 2-6, 2-1.

Lynchburg Christian 24

North Cross 7

LYNCHBURG - The Raiders scored the first touchdown, but the Bulldogs scored the next three touchdowns - including two in the second half - as LCA won the Virginia Independent Conference matchup.

North Cross (4-3, 3-0) scored on its opening drive. Skip Johnson, who rushed for 88 yards on 16 carries, ended an 11-play, 68-yard drive with a 25-yard touchdown run to put the Raiders up 7-0.

The Bulldogs (2-6, 2-1) took the ensuing kickoff and drove 77 yards, and scored on a 1-yard run by quarterback Jason Page. David Alldredge's conversion run gave LCA an 8-7 lead.

The Bulldogs scored in the third quarter when Dominique Forlano hit pay dirt on a 3-yard run. The big play in the drive came when Page, who completed seven of nine passes for 141 yards, hit Billy Sites for a 33-yard gain on third-and-26 to the North Cross 30.

Page hit Sites, who caught four passes for 110 yards, on a 36-yard strike in the fourth quarter to bring the Bulldogs to the North Cross 8. Two plays later, David Alldredge, who rushed for 122 yards on 25 carries, took it in from 6 yards and put away the game.

North Cross had its chances, driving inside the Bulldogs' 20 three times, but couldn't capitalize.

Halifax County 29

Franklin County 16

SOUTH BOSTON - Detrius Medley rushed for 156 yards and Maurice Roberts ran for two touchdowns as the Comets beat the Eagles in a non-district game.

Halifax County (5-3) led 23-0 after three quarters. Medley scored on a 5-yard run in the first quarter, and Roberts had touchdown runs of 18 and 21 yards.

Franklin County (2-6) cut its deficit to 23-10 on a safety - after Halifax County snapped the ball out of bounds on a punt attempt - and K.C. Hendrick's 15-yard touchdown run.

Halifax made it 30-10 on Michael Chappell's 1-yard run. The Eagles completed the scoring with Steve McGhee's 28-yard touchdown reception on a Gary Hodges pass.

Covington 28

Craig County 14

COVINGTON - Tom Luckett rushed for 141 yards on 27 carries and scored one touchdown as the Cougars wore down the Rockets in the second half en route to the Pioneer District victory.

Covington (2-5, 1-1) took control of the game in the fourth quarter. Quarterback Mike Barber returned a punt 78 yards and the extra point gave the Cougars their first lead of the game, at 21-14. William Stewart then scored from 7 yards late in the game to seal the victory.

Craig County (3-4, 1-3) took an early 8-0 lead on an 18-yard run by quarterback Robby Huffman. The Rockets then led 14-6 on a 78-yard kickoff return by Chris Blankenship, but Craig wore down in the second half.

Luckett rushed for 102 yards after intermission as Covington rushed for 233 yards.

Amherst 50

Staunton River 0

AMHERST - The Lancers continued their dominance of the Seminole District by making the Golden Eagles their seventh victim in the usual punishing fashion.

Amherst (7-0, 7-0) outgained Staunton River (2-5, 2-5) 434-67 in total yardage as it posted its sixth shutout of the season.

Larry Hunter rushed for 163 yards and scored four touchdowns on only eight carries. Alonzo Matthews scored on a 68-yard run on Amherst's first play of the game.

R.B. Bennett rushed for 134 yards, including a 90-yard touchdown run in the fourth quarter.

Rockbridge County 14

Alleghany 7

LEXINGTON - Gary Tyree rushed for 103 yards and scored two touchdowns, and the Wildcats held off the Mountaineers in a Blue Ridge District game.

Rockbridge County came up with three key interceptions, the first two setting up touchdowns.

John Camden picked off a Jason Boggs pass and returned it 37 yards to the Alleghany 23-yard line. Tyree scored on the Wildcats' next play from scrimmage by bouncing outside after being stopped at the line of scrimmage.

In the second quarter, Chad Brown intercepted a deflected pass at the Wildcats' 47, and Rockbridge County (3-4, 2-1) began a 10-play scoring drive capped by Tyree's 1-yard touchdown run with 55 seconds left before halftime.

The score remained 14-0 until the fourth quarter, when Kevin Cook, who finished with 65 yards, put the Mountaineers on the board with a 2-yard touchdown run with 10 minutes, 18 seconds remaining. Alleghany (3-4, 1-2) got the ball twice more, but never mounted another threat.
