FOSTER WILL SPEAK TO SPORTS CLUB

Bill Foster, the Virginia Tech men's basketball coach, will speak Thursday at the Roanoke Valley Sports Club meeting at the Salem Civic Center.

Foster will discuss his job as an assistant coach on the U.S. Goodwill Games team that traveled to St. Petersburg, Russia, during the the summer and preview the Hokies' 1994-95 season.

A social begins at 6 p.m., with dinner at 6:30. Cost is $10 for members; non-members can join for $25 and attend the dinner. Call Dan Wooldridge at 389-7373 or Jody Moir at 989-5927.

In Gettysburg, Pa., the Washington and Lee women's cross country team finished fourth Saturday at the Gettysburg Invitational behind the strong running of junior Amy Mears, who ran the sixth-fastest time ever on the course. Mears, who finished in 18 minutes, 11 seconds, was second overall - 20 seconds behind Jo Rupp of Division II Millersville.

The men's team finished ninth among 15 teams as West Virginia Wesleyan took home the men's title, finishing one point ahead of Shippensburg. The Generals were led by Jason Callen, who was 17th and ran the five-mile course in a career-best time of 25 minutes, 35 seconds.

In Warrenton, Scott Shepherd finished fourth in the Division II portion of the Octoberfest at Great Meadows to help the Blacksburg High School boys' cross country team win Division II.

Shepherd ran the course in 16:45 and finished 14 seconds behind the leader, Tim Kaschuk of Potomac. David Williams came in 15th with a time of 17 minutes and David Brown (18th), Jeff Hendricks (21st), and David Dowdy (47th) helped Blacksburg finish 38 points ahead of second-place Stafford in the team competition.

The Virginia Tech women's soccer team ended a five-game losing streak with a 1-0 victory over American University at Tech Park. Freshman Monica Maxwell scored the game's lone goal in the 13th minute. The Hokies are 8-7; American is 6-8.

In Baltimore, the Washington and Lee women's soccer team was shut out by the College of Notre Dame (Md.) 7-0 in its regular-season finale. Christine Scelso and Carina Rilsmandel scored two goals each for Notre Dame (12-4). The Generals (9-4) will entertain Guilford on Tuesday in a quarterfinal of the Old Dominion Athletic Conference Tournament.

In Arlington, Roanoke College held Marymount without a shot as the Maroons breezed to a 3-0 victory in women's soccer. Laura Bukevec had a goal and set up goals by Lisa Franzino and Amy Waldman for Roanoke (9-4-2). Marymount is 1-15-1.

In Radford, Gerald Lakatos scored off a deflected shot at 77:15 of the second half to lift Radford to a 1-0 victory over Towson State in Big South Conference men's soccer. Radford is 10-5-2, 5-2; Towson State 8-8, 2-5.

In Dover, Del., Rick Wells scored in the 35th minute to lift Roanoke College (8-8) to a 1-0 men's soccer victory over Wesley.

Also in Dover, Del., Jennifer Kent scored in overtime to give Roanoke College a 1-0 victory over Wesley in field hockey. The Maroons improved their record to 8-5.

In Winston-Salem, N.C., Radford's field hockey team saw its four-game winning streak snapped as the Highlanders were shut out 3-0 by Wake Forest. The Demon Deacons got goals from Gin Verkleij, Christen Horsey and Mary Moore as Radford's record slipped to 7-7.

In Norfolk, three Virginia Tech singles players and two doubles teams remained alive at the ODU Invitational women's tennis tournament. Katherine Chen won her third-round match at No.3 singles, and No.4 singles players Jen Lampert and Julie Jackson also made it through the third round. Cathy Dixon and Jen Dinello won their second-round match at No.1 doubles, and Daria Ivan and Lampert won in the second round at No.2 doubles.

In Athens, Ga., Oliver Mayo, the only Virginia Tech men's tennis player to make it through the first round, dropped his second-round match at the Southern Collegiate Championships. Louisiana State's Ryan Ideta defeated the sophomore from Australia 6-2, 7-6 in ``A'' division singles.
