NEW ALLERGY SPRAY WINS APPROVAL

Allergy sufferers will soon have a new form of relief.

The Food and Drug Administration has approved Flonase Nasal Spray, a once-a-day spray for allergic rhinitis.

Rhinitis is nasal inflammation that causes a constant runny nose and sneezing. It can be a symptom of a bad cold, but some 35 million Americans suffer it for weeks at a time because of allergies.

Antihistamines and decongestants don't reduce the inflammation. Other nasal sprays do, but manufacturer Glaxo Inc. said Flonase is the first once-a-day spray marketed in a water solution.

It will be available by prescription in January.
