BALES, Jack Gayle, 55, of Marion, died Saturday, October 22, 1994, in Smyth County Community Hospital. Mr. Bales was preceded in death by a son , Michael Gayle Bales; his parents, Leon Clinton and Lelia Primm Bales and a brother, James Eugene Bales. Mr. Bales was a veteran in the United States Army having the rank of Specialist, and was a life member of the Marion VFW Post #4667. He was also an active member of the Marion Baptist Church. He is survived by his wife, Betty Stover Bales of Marion; three daughters and sons-in-law, Donna and Charles Gilbert Lawrence III of Knoxville, Tennessee, Robin and Michael Allan Elkins Sr. of North Tazwell, Va. and Michelle Kristin Bales of Marion, Virginia; three sons and a daughter-in-law, SFC Phillip Todd Bales of Fort Riley, Kansas, Robert Dale and Ann Bales of Marion, Va. and Christopher Clinton Bales of Athens, West Virginia; three brothers, Donald Leon Bales of Atkins, Va., Roger Dale Bales of Marion, Va. and Larry Lane Bales of Abingdon, Va.; four grandchildren, Donald Leon Bales II, Charles Gilbert Lawrence IV, Michael Allan Elkins, Jr., and Adam Casey Lawrence; several nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be held Wednesday, October 26, 1994, 2 p.m. at the Marion Baptist Church with Dr. William A. Slater, Rev. Glenn Gunter and Rev. Neville Mozingo officiating. Burial will follow in Wassum Cemetery in Atkins, Va. where military rites will be conducted by Marion VFW Post #4667. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Marion Life Saving Crew, P.O. Box 784, Marion, VA. 24354 or the Marion Baptist Church Elevator Fund, 1258 N. Main Street, Marion, Virginia 24354. FOX, Gertraud Schweier, 67, of Fairfield, died Saturday, October 22, 1994, at her residence. She was born May 15, 1927, in Munich, Germany, a daughter of Maria Ibscher Schweier of Munich, Germany and the late Adolf Schweier. Mrs. Fox was a teacher. Also, she was a member of St. Patrick's Catholic Church, Lexington. In addition to her mother, survivors include her husband, Dr. Kurt J. Fox, Fairfield; a daughter, Mrs. Kathleen Sagmeister Fox and son-in-law, Dr. Rudolf Sagmeister of Lochau, Austria; a son, Christian Fox and daughter-in-law, Julie Fox, London, England; a daughter, Ms. Susanna J. Fox, Fairfield; a twin sister, Mrs. Gabriele Duschl, Munich, Germany; five grandchildren, Maria, Aurelia and Bruno Sagmeister, Lochau, Austria, Timothy and William Fox, London, England. A memorial service will be conducted at St. Patrick's Catholic Church, 11 a.m. Saturday, October 29, 1994, with the Rev. Father John Behan, C.P.B. officiating. GOAD, Lutie Davis, 71, of Fairfield, died Saturday, October 22, 1994 at her home. Mrs. Goad was born May 14, 1923 in Amherst, Va., a daughter of the late Daniel Davis and Dora Sorrells Davis. She was a member of the Spring Valley Baptist Church. Surviving are her husband, Charlie H. Goad Sr., Fairfield; six children, Barbara Cole, New Castle, Bonnie Lonon, Chesterfield, Charlie Goad Jr., Lexington, Betty Wray, Colonial Heights, W. D. Goad, Lexington, Brenda Travalini, Midlothian; one sister, Mandy Cash, Fairfield; and 10 grandchildren. HARRIS, Daniel Jack, 61, of Rt. 4, Lexington, died Saturday, October 22, 1994 in Stonewall Jackson Hospital after a lengthy illness. He was born August 29, 1933 in Patrick County, son of Elethe Barnard Harris of Stuart and the late Herbert H. Harris. He was married and lovingly devoted to his wife of 39 years, Margaret Roberts Harris, who was the inspiration, not only of his life, but also for the book that he authored, The Angel Wore A Yellow Dress. A member of many community organizations, his struggle with a rare and incurable disease was an inspiration to many. A veteran of the Korean War, he served in the U. S. Army, Navy and Virginia National Guard. He was active in the American Legion Post 126 in Buena Vista, serving as post commander and chaplain, as well as chairman of numerous committees. He also served as the American Legion 14th District Commander in 1976, state vice-commander in 1977, chairman of the 14th District Executive Committee, chaplain of the 14th District in 1988 and member of the national executive committee for four years. His service to the Legion was honored in 1976 with Virginia post commander of the year in 1976, and Virginia Legionnaire of the Year in 1979. He also organized the Rockbridge Voiture 829 of the 40/8, an honor society of the American Legion, ultimately serving as commander and vice-commander of that society. He was also elected as Grand Drapeau and Grand Garde de La Porte of that state organization in 1978, and as state chaplain of the Grand Voiture de Virginiae for two years. Mr. Harris was also an active member of the Buena Vista Masonic Lodge 186 A.F. & A.M., serving as junior and senior deacon, junior and senior warden, chaplain and master of the lodge. He ultimately received the 2nd Degree of the Mason Scottish Rite. Other prominent civic roles he served were as vice-president of the Rivermont Heights Civic Association; a member of the Buena Vista Jaycees; and member, vice-president and president of the Rockbridge Shrine Club. He was employed for 30 years with the Federal Aviation Administration, receiving numerous letters of commendation and three FAA SAA awards before retiring. He was also a member of Neriah Baptist Church. He was predeceased by a half brother, Willie Harris. In addition to his mother and wife, he is survived by two sons, Jerry W. Harris, Lexington and James T. Harris, Sterling; a daughter, Teresa Harris Cunningham, Rockbridge Co.; two brothers, Early Harris, Stuart, Walter Harris, Collinsville; a half brother, Lloyd Harris, Stuart; three sisters, Virgie Cassady, Jessie Harris and Minnie Harris, all of Stuart; three grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. The graveside service, with military and Masonic rites, will be held at 1 p.m. Tuesday, October 25, 1994, at Neriah Baptist Church by the Rev. Jill Y. Crainshaw and the Rev. J. C. Raper. Friends and family may visit Monday, October 24, from 7 to 9 p.m. at Bolling, Grose & Lotts Funeral Chapel. Memorial contributions may be made to the American Legion Post 126 Scholarship Fund, to Neriah Baptist Church Food Bank or to the Lexington Hospice Association.
HATCHER, Thurman C., 86, of Roanoke, died Saturday, October 22, 1994 in a local hospital. He was preceded in death by his parents, Lawrence and Belle Hatcher, and a brother, Daniel Lee Hatcher. He was a veteran of WWII, where he was awarded the Bronze Star for heroic achievements in action while serving with a medical detachment of the 5th Army in Italy. He is a member of the Villa Heights Baptist Church. He is survived by several cousins and close friends. Graveside service 10 a.m. Wednesday Sherwood Memorial Park with the Rev. Harold C. Lewis officiating. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p. m. Tuesday. He was the son of the late Herbert M. Solomon and Foy Pitman Solomon. He was preceded in death by a son, Raymond Vernell Solomon, Jr. and mother-in-law, Nannie T. Ramsey.
