DUKE UPSETS UVA IN OT

Duke's Bobby Moghim scored 1 minute, 33 seconds into the first overtime to break a 1-1 tie and give the Blue Devils' a 2-1 victory over Virginia (13-3, 4-2) in an Atlantic Coast Conference men's soccer match at Charlottesville Sunday.

UVa's A.J. Wood opened the scoring in the 38th minute as he redirected a cross from Sean Feary from 7 yards out. Kevin Stein tied the score for Duke (9-5-1 overall, 3-3 ACC) on a 3-yard header in the 48th minute off a corner kick by Jason Kreis.

On the game-winner, Kreis got a corner kick from the right of the UVa goal and centered the ball to Judd Willmann in the box left of the goal. Willman headed the ball toward the goal and Moghim, who was 3 yards out redirected the ball on a header from his knees into the far side of the net.

Virginia Tech and Virginia are tied for fourth place with men's golf team scores of 303 after the first round of the 27-team John Ryan Iron Duke Golf Classic in Durham, N.C. East Tennessee State leads with a 292. Tech's Curtis Deal and David Havens shot 75s and are tied for 24th place individually.

Radford scored three second-half goals and goalie Holly Patterson stopped a penalty kick with seven minutes remaining as the Lady Highlanders (7-9-1, 3-3) held off UNC Asheville (7-9-2, 2-4) 3-2 in a Big South Conference women's soccer game in Asheville, N.C.

Goals by Clint Mathis and Chris Faklaris pushed third-ranked South Carolina (12-2, 3-0) to a 2-0 Metro Conference men's soccer victory over Virginia Tech (4-10, 0-3) in Blacksburg.

Michele Hager's goal gave Virginia Tech (8-8) a 1-0 second-half lead, but Dayton (7-8) scored three unanswered goals to win a women's soccer match 3-1 at Blacksburg.

Roanoker K.J. Hippensteel placed third Sunday in the boys' age-14 division of the Middle Atlantic tennis championships played in Newport News. Hippensteel, 26-1, downed Carter Morris of Washington, D.C., to capture third. Hippensteel, 26-1 in matches this season, retained his No.1 division ranking in the four-state Middle Atlantic region.

Virginia Tech lost both of its men's tennis matches in the opening round of the Southern Collegiate Championships at the University of Georgia Saturday. Adam Gottfried and Oliver Mayo, and Andrew Krafft and Marek Pheil, fell in doubles.

Virginia Tech had five finalists in the ODU Invitational in Norfolk. Earning championships for the Hokies were Katherine Chen (No.3 singles), Julie Jackson (No.4 singles, beating teammate Jennifer Lampert) and Daria Ivan (No.6 singles). Ivan and Lampert finished second at No.2 doubles.
