Sheriff C.E. Simpson said his department received a call about 8 p.m. Sunday from custodians at the college, who found a man's body lying next to a brick wall outside the student union building.
The man, believed to be in his 30s and from New York, had not been identified by late Monday afternoon.
Simpson said the man had suffered no visible wounds, and that possible causes of death could be suicide or natural causes, such as a heart attack. An autopsy has been scheduled for today in Roanoke.
"We don't suspect any kind of foul play," Simpson said. "There doesn't appear to have been a struggle."
The man's car had been found earlier in the day, broken down on Interstate 64 about 15 miles away. He had been seen walking around Clifton Forge and on the Dabney Lancaster campus Sunday afternoon.
Simpson said custodians first noticed the man sitting on a brick wall about 6:30 p.m., and called police later, after noticing that he had slumped to the ground.
