ROANOKE DOCTOR GETS STATE GRANT

The state Health Department has given a Roanoke doctor a $39,508 grant to develop sickle-cell anemia services for Southwest and south central Virginia.

Dr. Ron Neuberg, director of hematology and oncology at The Children's Hospital at Community Hospital of Roanoke Valley, will be responsible for developing sickle-cell clinics in Roanoke and Danville, educating area physicians on current treatment strategies, and providing community education and outreach to make certain people with the disease have adequate medical services.

Sickle-cell anemia is a common genetic disease that mainly affects blacks and people of Mediterranean descent. It is characterized by chronic anemia.
