CAVE SPRING IN THE HUNT FOR GOLF TITLE

Roanoke Valley District champion Cave Spring shot a 305 total Monday and stands one shot behind co-leaders Clover Hill and Mills Godwin heading into today's final round of the Group AAA State golf tournament being played at the Hamptons course in Hampton.

Victor Garcia led the Knights with a 3-over-par 74. Bryan Staggs (75), Doug Kenney (77) and Chad Williams (79) were the other Cave Spring scorrrs.

Garcia's 74 puts him fourth individually. Oakton's G.W. Cable leads at 70, followed by Frank Cox's Matt Paulson at 71.

Frank Cox is tied with Cave Spring in what is shaping up as a four-way race for team honors.

The Knights will be trying to become the first Roanoke Valley District state champion since Salem won in 1983 with a team also guided by current Cave Spring coach Dave Layman.

Pulaski County's Matt Gardner, the only other RVD player who qualified, shot an 83.

In other golf:

Region III champion Appomattox fired a 320 total to take a three-shot lead on York through the first round of the Group AA golf tournament in Lee County.

Handley's Rob Warren fired a 71 to take a three-shot lead on Fort Defiance's Chip Glover and Appomattox's Faber Jamerson in the individual chase. Rockbridge County's Eric Reynolds and Lord Botetourt's Mark Sweeney, the two individual qualifiers out of the Blue Ridge District, shot 78 and 79, respectively.

Chip Sullivan of Roanoke and partner John Stone of Williamsburg are leading the Mid-Atlantic Two-Man Team Championship at the par-72 Shenandoah Valley Golf Club in Front Royal.

Sullivan, the Hanging Rock Golf Club teaching pro, and Stone, of Williamsburg Country Club, shot a 9-under total of 98 through 27 holes of the 54-hole tournament. The tournament is split into three nine-hole rounds - one selective-shot round, one alternate-shot round and a best-ball round.

Jack Snyder of Lake Monticello and Mike Moyers from Green Hills, both in Charlottesville, are at 99. Tim Holbrook of Hidden Valley Country Club and Billy King of Blue Hills Golf Club are tied for third at 7-under 100.

Virginia placed third and Virginia Tech 10th in the Iron Duke Classic, which concluded Monday at the Duke Golf Club in Durham, N.C.

East Tennessee State slipped to a final-round 301 for a 17-over 593 total, but held on for a two-shot victory over North Carolina State. Following UVa (598) were Duke (600) and North Carolina (605).

Cavs junior Simon Cooke shot an even-par 72 to finish fourth individually at 146. ETSU's Brian Omelia, the only competitor in the 141-player field to break par, took individual honors at 2-under 142.

The Hokies finished with a 616 total. Individually for Tech on Monday, Sean Farrell led the way with a 74.

FOOTBALL Tech's Freeman wins award

Virginia Tech's Antonio Freeman has been awarded the AT&T Long Distance punt return award for NCAA Division I-A college football this week. Freeman returned a third-quarter punt 80 yards of a touchdown as the 13-ranked Hokies crushed Pittsburgh 45-7 on Saturday.

In recognition of Freeman's accomplishment, AT&T has donated $400 to the NCAA's Degree-Completion Award Program.

Miami safety Tremain Mack has been suspended indefinitely for an unspecified violation of team rules, the school announced. Mack, a redshirt freshman, will miss the Hurricanes' game against Virginia Tech on Saturday.

ETC. ODAC tourneys begin today

Roanoke College will compete in all three of the five fall Old Dominion Athletic Conference tournament championships that begin today and Washington and Lee will compete in two.

The Maroons' men's soccer team will attempt to defend its 1993 championship as the No. 5 seed. Roanoke (8-8 overall, 5-4 ODAC) opens play against fourth-seeded Eastern Mennonite (11-6-1, 5-3-1) at 3:30 p.m. in Harrisonburg. No. 6 seed Washington and Lee (7-5-2, 4-4-1) will travel to No. 3 Randolph-Macon (13-4-1, 7-2) for a 3:30 game.

Roanoke's women's soccer team (9-4-2, 5-3), the conference runner-up last year, is seeded fourth and will open play against No. 5 Lynchburg (10-8, 4-4) in Salem. Third-seeded W&L (9-4, 6-2) plays host to No. 6 Guilford (5-8, 3-5). Both games are at 3:30 p.m.

In the field hockey tournament, fifth-seeded Roanoke (7-5, 4-4) opens play against No. 4 Virginia Wesleyan (7-4, 5-3) in Norfolk at 3 p.m.

Western Kentucky has received a basketball commitment from 5-foot-10 Rob Williams, the point guard for Oak Hill Academy in Mouth of Wilson.

Williams transferred to Oak Hill, ranked No.1 in the country last season, after helping Science Hill High School of Kingsport, Tenn., to the state championship in its classification. Williams picked Western Kentucky over Xavier of Ohio.

Alicia Todd and Debra Masters of Cave Spring defeated Elizabeth Smith and Brooke Warner of C.D. Hylton 6-4, 6-0 in a doubles semifinal match to advance to the final in the Northwest Region tennis tournament at Lynchburg. Todd and Masters will face Sara Thayaprasat and Heather Danforth of Woodbridge in the final today. Thayaprasat and Danford defeated Elizabeth Gay and Michelle Martin of E.C. Glass 4-6, 7-5, 7-6 (7-4).

Julia Michaels of North Stafford defeated Todd 6-2, 6-0 in the singles final. In the semifinals, Todd beat Smith 6-4, 6-3 and Michaels defeated Gay 6-1, 6-3.
